Look out for the grizzly bear on the island.

Are you staying on Quadra Island, where? On the west side of Quadra, tides run through pretty quickly. I'd be real cautious in a boat that small.

What pat said the Discovery passage has stiff current and it gets nasty when the weather is up against the tide. I recall a 60 foot seine boat going down near the lighthouse. I wouldn't plan a trip with a 12 footer having to cross it, the east side of Quadra might be a better bet if you can launch from Quadra island. Stop in at Tyee sports or River sportsman in Campbell and as for advice they should be able to give you some ideas on safe places to poke around with your little skiff.

Here's the best preparation going stick this on your phone or whatever and check it a couple times a day through your trip ;)

Launch at Rebecca Spit and fish the east side of Quadra. The west side is a bit wild for a 12' tinner. Buy a couple buzz bombs and fish the bottom and see what happens. Growing up there we only had a small boat and caught salmon and rock fish on buzzbombs out there. Real nice water and if your bored you can explore Rebecca Spit, Heriot Bay, Open Bay etc.
