So this will be my first year goat hunting and im pumped as hell to get up in the mountains. However it's all new to me so I wanted to ask you goat nuts about any special pointers that help with goats specifically. I'm pretty familiar with sheep hunting and the whole aspect of mountain hunting so im more looking for specifics on goats.
Also one of the main reasons I wanted to start this thread was to ask what you guys do with your meat? I have never eaten goat meat and don't know anyone who has so im just curious as to what cuts you get and what kind of meals you prepare. I'm really exited to try it.
And I hate to be this guy but I have the draw for 3-16C so any info on that area would be a huge help. Planning on getting up there as soon as the smoke calms down a bit but as for now im doing alot of research on hiking websites, Google Earth, and other forums. Planning on calling the co's soon aswel and trying to get ahold of the local biologist.
Thanks in advance guys, I know not many people are a fan of the "I got a draw help me" threads, myself included, but we all gotta start somewhere and you all were first time goat hunters at some point too lol anything would be hugely appreciated.

If you get some range time... draw up a goat silhouette with 9 or 10 inch horns. Place it at different yardages and see how it compares on different magnifications. I found it helped me in field judging goats. Another trick is, it's easier to see the black on the inside of a goat's ear. Rule of thumb is that black patch on the inside of the ear is 3 inches long. So if the goat's horn is 3 of those long or bigger, it's probably a shooter.

The worst part is being able to see them... the worst is trying to get to them.

Goat is great, just chewy. I use the prime cuts for stews/stirfrys/fajitas and grind the rest. 95% goes in the grinder. It is a bit bland, kind of like bison, their closest relative in N America.

Sept 2014 goat hunt. Billy taken on the top of mountain at 70 yards laying beside another billy . . . appeared to be down after 5 shots . . . but as we know "goats die when they want to!" One last flinch and airborne 400 yards into the abyss of cliffs down the back side of the mountain shown in the first photo. Six hour solo retrievel back to the top just as the skies darkened . . . mentally and physically done but tried to keep hiking and no can do. Crawled into the garbage bag for the night . . . another 8 hours back to base camp and 6 more hours back to the truck. Be prepared to do battle and increase your life insurance if you wish to take up the challenge. Great meat especially once it's tenderized!

After 20 years of chasing these beautiful animals I still get just as excited as the first time. Always learning on each hunt . . . in this case I should have went for the neck shot over the spine shot given the way he was laying in the photo. Best advice is to simply put the boots to the ground and get out there, train hard, bring good gear and have fun!

My Youngest boy, got drawn for Goat up here in the Tumbler Area

right on Eric - My son's first ever draw was a goat - he filled it on Swing Peak at age 8 or 9 (he says 8, I thought 9), and he's been addicted ever since, 23 years ago. Oldest grandson's first draw was also a goat filled on Kits in the pissing rain five years ago when he was 10. There's nothing else I can think of that is more character building in kids than goat hunting.

It will be interesting to see how many of us tag one and I'm sure the stories will be awesome with or without a goat.

My only experience with goat was 12 years ago in the Palliser river area hunting elk and someone 2 campsites down from us got an old Billy . It smelled so bad we moved camp and I have never understood how anybody could hunt and or eat anything that was already rotten while it was still alive

Like others have said goat can be very bland and almost always tough/chewy. Only ever shot one that had a weird musk to it... perfect meat for the sausage machine :). Good luck to all you virgin goat hunters out there! Hunting them white specs at the top of the world is probably the most addicting thing I have ever done (right beside stones). Looking forward to some stories/pics

Lol... it wasn't really... it looks nice until you get in it. Between the sasquatches throwing ice and rocks at you, and trying to keep your footing on the icey granite faces...

But there is something rewarding packing 500 pounds of water off a mountain...

Man this is shaping up to be a great thread!!!

When I was living in Alberta, I absolutely DREAMED of hunting mountain goats in BC. I guided one back in 2002 and ever since I had wanted to hunt one for myself. Well, once I moved it was high on the list of hunts that I could do nice and close to my new home in the Kootenays. A bit of learning and I've managed to shoot two decent billies. Need to get around to mounting one of them now!!

First one was a solo day trip, and the other was a cool trip with friends into a new LEH zone we hunted last year. Cant wait to hunt them again!! I'll be helping a couple guys with tags this year for sure! We are so damn lucky to live in BC and hunt these animals yearly!!!

this is a little off topic but how useful do you find the conservation officer service and local biologists? are they truly a wealth of information. This is a route I've ignored in the past when hunting new areas or planning a hunt. What kind of Information are they able to provide to a hunter.

I'm right there with a bunch of you-first goat hunt coming in September. Super timely thread-definitely something I'll be following as the summer progresses.

To all you veteran goat hunters out there, thank you for sharing what you've learned. I've spent enough time in the mountains without a rifle to know just how important it is to have someone who's been there before to make sure you're not planning something that will end in disaster.

Good luck everyone and if anyone drew 7-03 get in touch-I'd love to compare notes.

Cheers.

DONT SHOOT NANNIES .... avoid it at all cost ... they are a more important lead to the group then the Billys .......

Dont shoot them in places where you will DIE trying to retrieve it ... Dont shoot them if there will be nothing but smashed Goat and the end of the fall.

DONT SHOOT NANNIES .... avoid it at all cost ... they are a more important lead to the group then the Billys .......

Dont shoot them in places where you will DIE trying to retrieve it ... Dont shoot them if there will be nothing but smashed Goat and the end of the fall.

Excellent advice. Do everything you can to not shoot a nanny. Learn to tell the differences - there are some, and not just horn shape. I say this because a buddy of mine mistakenly shot a nanny and until I jokingly said "What if it's a nanny?" just before cutting it up, and we checked and were surprised. Even the CO, doing the compulsory inspection was fooled. You always have way more time than you may think to evaluate a goat. Try to get above them for the best view. Wearing white, can help you get close.

Pick your spots. I know of a goat that had to be left on the mountain till spring when it fell from where it got snagged up. The mountain was VERY steep and covered in ice. Be prepared to have the $hit scared out of you as you retrieve your animal. Both of mine were solo hunts and as you are clinging to bits of moss and small shrubs while crossing near vertical rock, it's sobering to think that you may never see your kids again, and no one knows where you are. SPOT wasn't available then. Get a SPOT and/or a partner - they can help with the pack and direct you to the goat on your stalk.
As previously mentioned, I've always found the meat to have very little taste, so season it well and try a small piece before butchering as it may even make sausages tough.
With all of these positive thoughts, it is great, challenging, and rewarding hunt. nothing like it. I found it more challenging than sheep hunting. Lots of pucker factor.
Good luck.

I picked up a goat draw last year for 5-04 zone J, never been there before, contacted a few folks on here and out there for info, the folks on here were great for supplying some good info.

Glad to have gone up there and explored a lot, didn't connect with a goat, but did get to see a few, all n all it was a fun adventure,

and this year the adventure continues, I drew the same goat draw again, yee haa!!

If you mention where, some of these fine folks on here may be able to point you in the right direct for your area.

I hunted goats three different seasons but have yet to pull the trigger, hopefully this year is successful, but then again I've always seen the game I'm going after and that there makes it a successful hunt for me. Some times making it back off the side of a mountain in particularly nasty weather after stalking goats is enough excitement one can endure. There is nothing like hunting those crazy critters, hope all you other goat hunters have a successful safe season.

Read the book " A Beast the color of Winter " great read ....... By a biologist that studies them year round explaining habits . A good friend a BC Retired biologist put me on it.

If if ya want to go back in time like 110 years ...... Read Campfires in the Rockies ...... An old time perspective. Published in 1905 and still has one of the BEST pics of a Billy taken from 6 ft away ....... Incredible pic for its time

Drew a goat tag last year. Went solo. I came home with the tag buring a hole in my pocket. It was a long season to try again but after the first adventure my knee could not take the hike again. It was the most exciting and thrilling hunt that Ive ever done. I shake just thinking about it. Reading these threads and looking at the pictures gives me that buck fever feeling "love it". Never drew this year but my group got a moose draw so I super happy about that. Then my cousin tells me he drew my goat tag :) hes a first timer and wants to know everything about it. The fever is back as I plan to accompany him SO excited about it. Good luck to all you first timers, last years tag was my first time too. Prepare and study the differences of gender really important not to take a nanny. Ski polls or good shooting sticks will save your knees alot more then you'd think. You can do all the conditioning you want but you need to be limber and strech. Turned out my knee issue was a muscle band from my hip to the outside of my knee streching it and massage therapy and the pain is gone. Cant wait to get after them again. Good Luck to all you goat hunters.

I have found sizing goats by comparing horn length to length of ear or eye to nose very difficult because the scale isn't much different between a young and a mature goat. What I have learned to look for is the overall shape of the animal. Imagine drawing a rectangle around the body of the goat excluding the head from a side view. If the animal is as tall as it is long your rectangle is a square and the animal is likely a young one. If the animal is longer than it is tall then you have a rectangle and the animal is more likely to be mature. This can be subtle as well but it is another tool to use in the field.

I remember my late Gramps telling me about hunting Goats up at or near the head of Stave Lake with his Brother, nope they definitely didn't have gor-tex back then, but they did have a Savage 99 300Sav. for a rifle.
I didn't see that rifle until I was 6 so 1979, and even at that point in time it was still a non-scoped rifle, in fact it still wears nothing on top today.

In my expirence, with older Billy's the first thing I look at (if in a reasonable range) is his face, a big thick roman nose, kinda a horse face so to speak usually will. Also his body build, mature Billy's are built like a bulldog, although I have seen some beefy old nannys also. The best goat hunting advise I got from my dad when I started on my own was, look for the steepest craigiest narliest looking chunk of the mountain, that's where the old Billy's will be.

Bringing this one back up to where it belongs.

To all the goat gurus, Is there a particular time of the season to focus harder on the goat draw? A lot of us virgins have Sept 1 to Oct 31 draws and I'm wondering if any part of that time frame is traditionally more active for a goat.

Thanks,
Brad

Early November for the rut you will see the billies moving a lot. In your situation I would focus on the last 2 weeks of October, if the weather is miserable, and then you hit a few days of sun it will be going off! Also the later the season the longer the hair!

decker9

In my experience, no time is any better then the other really in the September-October. As nor mentioned, that last week of two in October you may have better chance of seeing a billy out roaming. Iv personally have always been fond of the last week of September'ish just because the weathers generally better and the bugs arnt quite so bad.

Now for a later draw, the February hunt is awesome! When the snow gets that crust on it, it's a breeze to walk on and most of the blowdown and devils club is covered up.

Hunting the rut is a lot of fun to, but for a new fellow to goats, judging between nannys and Billy's can get difficult when they'r all in a group, unless there's an old captain obvious lol.

it wouldn't hurt my feelings to have to use a day's holidays this year just for reading goat story's..... Just sayin

Good luck all!

l tried to go as late a possible to get that nice long hair. It does look spectacular. I would start mid Oct but the weather can be miserably rainy. I've gone the last week of Nov a few times and it's COLD and the snow up to my waist but the hides were beautiful. Didn't kill any those times but I would do it again. Just be careful of ice.

I also meant to say that just because I prefer later season goats doesn't mean I won't be out there Aug 1st. Biggest thing for a new guy is to put in time, you will learn so much. Even if it's just weekends. I had to weekend warrior the last two years, but I walked away with some nice billies :) every day you can spend out there do it. Glass, glass, glass. If it's foggy cut trails. Just put in the time and let nothing stand between you and getting out there. It will pay off, I know first hand!

Last season my son and I were both drawn for goats. As usual I was more driven for this hunt than usual, theres just something about wanting your kids to be successful. After watching my son shoot his first goat at 11yrs old I was even more driven to finally get my first goat( been drawn 12 times but never really hunted them ). I was surprised how much longer the hair was on my nov 20th goat than my sons( oct 5th ). Both goats were shot on the same mountain/slide and died with in 50yds of the other. If post pics but can't figure out how from my I phone.

I have the same draw again this year so I think I'll hold out for a bigger Billie. I just hope the snow conditions are similar this year in the east kootenay's.

Should tactics change for early season, unfortunately late September causes me to be on 6 day weeks! If I can get up those Sundays in October I will though the hike in and out will male it a very small shooting window lol

Have about three days scouting in august and am planning routes now, then am gonna fight the hikers on labour day weekend and go the 13-19 of September.

I've heard billies are sometimes lower early season?

split a goat with 2 others a couple of years ago...it was awesome...I was expecting a strong flavor but not at all..very mild flavor in fact. I would eat it cooked any way you like to cook it..... like any game meat get it drained of blood and cooled ASAP and it will be great...

... If it's foggy cut trails...

Hopefully someone keeps our trails open this year... or next year will suck... but I'm not holding my breath.

I enjoy the first two weeks of November personally. I'll go whenever though.
August: I find you have first light and last light to hunt them(goats hide on me when it's smokin' hot). You also gotta deal with the heat and keeping meat cool. Plus vegetation is thick.
September: Mild weather, devils club and stinging nettle start dying off.
October: Vegetation has died off completely. Sporadic weather.
November: Snow up high pushes goats low, rut is kicking in, ledges start icing up, weather is constantly shitty, great hair on goats, straight up fun
December: (haven't hunted December much) It's cold. Goats don't seem to move, so you gotta go find them. Days are short. Camping on the mountain sucks goat ass.
January: Haven't hunted January... but avalanche warnings were always prominent
Fedruary:
...Now for a later draw, the February hunt is awesome! When the snow gets that crust on it, it's a breeze to walk on and most of the blowdown and devils club is covered up...

I've heard billies are sometimes lower early season?

Sometimes but not usually. If the weather is poor they may come down more . . . generally on the upper 1/3rd of the mountain and often near the top. If weather is really hot then they are tougher to find. In the early season (Aug-Sept) best hunting from the top, meaning camp in the alpine, while in the later season I prefer to camp lower and hunt from the bottom up. Over the last 10 years for numerous reasons I changed to longer duration hunts (say 5 days) rather than going out on many one day . . . all out . . . balls to the wall trips. Overall success and enjoyment of the hunt is significantly higher wih the longer hunts.

We've gotta see the photo of your son's goat. My son is the same age and if all goes as planned next year is the year. Starting from mid August to mid November every two weeks translates into significant hair growth.

We've gotta see the photo of your son's goat. My son is the same age and if all goes as planned next year is the year. Starting from mid August to mid November every two weeks translates into significant hair growth.

Im willing to text pics if someone will post then for me.

I think I was just checking in on these guys after work one day. But I was re-looking at this picture today... The one on the left looks awefully billyish now...

Would have been an easy stalk and pack out from that spot...

When I lived in Vernon way back when, I entered the LEH draws in the spring of 1994. That was before Internet communication was widespread and paper was the way of the world. Well, after entering the draws, some things in life changed for me and I ended up moving back to Alberta. I had applied with friends, and they all went hunting that fall and took some beauty billies in the east Kotenays. I didn't find out that I was drawn that year until I made a visit back to Vernon at Christmas.

Alberta has only a small handful of tags available through the lottery draw. Lotto max odds are just slightly better than the chance of hunting goats here...but I have contacts in BC. In about a month I will be heading to the farthest northern reaches of my old home province to hunt the pretty white beasts of the mountain tops. It has been 21 years since I let my chance pass by, but finally it is coming together to have the opportunity at one of the critters I have dreamed about since I was a young kid. I can't hardly sleep thinking about it....

I hunt solo, so prefer September hunts. No snow or ice to deal with, I hate the cold, and much lighter gear to carry. If I was looking for a mount I'd go as late as possible though.

He was 10 1/2" but 6" bases and carried it well. The horns get denser with age, and at 12 years old it should hold its mass pretty well over the 60 day drying period.

Well this Albertan won the lottery this year !!! Not the 6-49 but the 1-7 . I drew one of seven Goat tags in the Willmore. It is a once in a lifetime and I cannot ever be drawn again so hopefully my luck continues..
I have hired a Packer to take myself and my son in..Its a 2 day ride just to get into where they hang out..
I have chosen Early October , so end of the first week.until end of second week to come out. Guaranteed to have snow in the hills by then.. Taking a Bow , a rifle and a Video camera to film this whole adventure ..
Good luck to the rest of you on your Annual Once in a lifetime BC Goat Hunts ..Play safe and shoot straight Boyz.

I gotta work early so I'll get on it tomorrow. Now I'm an Albertan but the hunt was in BC. Should I put it here or over in the Out Of Province heading?

I've definitely caught the bug after receiving my first LEH Goat hunt this year. Very demanding hunt that throws great challenges your way. I thought it was a one time bucket list hunt for myself....But I am looking forward to many more. The meat I got off my goat is incredible table fare. I'm not sure if it's a one off, but it honestly is the best meat I've ever had.

Thanks, was my first goat on my first try. But it didn't come with out experience help and shit house luck.
Long side is 10 7/8, broken side is 9 5/8".
My green score is somewhere between 47 and 49. Big deductions for the break off.

Congrats, great goat. Yes one short horn can hurt score. Was it an old break or done during a fall when shot.

It will be tough to top this on your second and subsequent hunts. Perfect hide too . . . get him mounted.

was just going through the before/after thread and looks like you were very lucky he didn't move after he was shot
looks like it was a bit steep behind him. Do you have a hunt write up posted some where as well.

I've been told this a few times.

I was going to do a half mount, but then I discovered how much that costs. I decided for 1/4 the price ill get a shoulder mount.
Being done at Artistic Creations in Campbell River.

Very steep behind him. I am working on a write for myself, to help remember it all. I will likely share when the winter blues hit...

Beautiful Billy BF, congrats!
I would have to agree that mtn goat is very underrated and falsely labeled as poor table fare. Tender, not so much but fabulous flavour. Although I hope my next to be a late season one, may change my mind yet!

Keep'n the goat thread alive!! Who else is out chasing the goat rut? Spent the 11th and 12th out scouting glassing and checking out Billy's. Seen 3 young boys trying their luck with the lady's, the few mature Billy's I seen were still where big Billy's hang. Iv got the goat bug bad this year, I got out to guide a hunt in September just to get my mountain fix, another couple weeks, the rut'n should get good. http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w411/decker1122/P1010149_zpsucnfygcf.jpghttp://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w411/decker1122/7A057010-0D58-450F-9CDA-55013A4086FA_zpswzux6d77.jpg

Nice Billy Decker. Curious to know what kind of pack that is. Looks like a MR, but that load sling does not look like any I've seen before.
