Last year I was working there and there was a big herd between 22-27 km. there is another herd that we would see around 10km. Good luck. Hope you get a monster. If I was you I go scout now and put up some cams with water softening salts as bait. I'm doing it for fun up Harrison lake and getting lots of pics. The elk won't leave the salt alone.

If you go up river about 5km and walk the shoreline you will see trails like maintained hiking trails with rubs and sign everywhere running parrellel to the river and then up into the draws...I would try to find a good overlook and wait and watch...1 logger I talked to saw them all the time at shift change.... Congrats on the tag, don't let it go to waste, I applied for it as well...

wow you are one lucky son of a gun. I always see elk up the stave. Great opportunity for you. Just do us all a favour and hold out for a BIG bull(cause they are there) and post your story afterwards (successful or not). Good luck!

She'll be skinny up there this fall. The fartherest I've been up there is a few Km past Winslow Creek where it braids into 3 channels. Check out the trails on the left side about 1.5km and hike up that side. They've been moving through there quite regularly. I too put in for that draw and I'm envious. Good luck.

I was close to the canyon. Caught some nice dollies there. That was before they transplanted elk up there.

Wentrot, I've seen that pic before it's been floating around. Do you know that guy personally? Funny thing was I got the picture before the season actually opened!

I saw a photo of an upper stave elk that was taken in the draw, I recall it being a pretty decent critter.

It's been challenging for myself. Pretty elusive buggers. Hunted opening weekend and got beat up by the remnants of that hurricane that rolled through. Crushed tent, swamped boat….crazy winds and rain! Hunted the weekend after with good conditions and dry gear! Unfortunately life will not allow me back up for a few weeks.
Covering lots of ground with the dirt bikes…. came close once, but it was too dark and we were 10km up the road with only one flash light which I duct taped to my helmet.
Opening day saw a nice bull taken by one of the groups right at first light. A beauty 7x7 with a busted off tine. They had been babysitting it since the Thursday. Another was taken on the Monday… a thick 6x6 with the beginnings of a 7th tine…..

What I've discovered is 5 LEH were issued this year. I have met the other 4, and none of them are from the first nations allotment.

Thus I've also seen the rack from a third group as well that hunted during the weekdays of the opener….a thinner 6x6

Group 4 was up there with us last weekend…. and I'm pretty sure they found one on the sunday as we were heading out. We had a cut off time of 11am in order to be home on time...

That leaves me…. group 5…. nothing down, but with 20 days in November to connect. I know the area well now. Seen lots of sign and have some good spots to set up.

It's been a super fun adventure so far!

I have a few pics I'll try to get uploaded...

hahahaha…..

what I'm learning is not like walking into the game farm and whacking an elk!
They're ghosts up there….not a single bugle or any cow chatter at all. Thick jungle, steep cut blocks, boat access and you need the ability to get 20+ km up the road….A lake that blows up like the north sea at the slightest wind….

Apply ….. but be prepared. Equipment is needed

that was just taken in the upper Pit Lake by there friend....it might be the 1st pic of that bull, but a different pic,
with the hunter with it....
none the less, nice looking bulls and cool terrain.
Did you get them bugling at all up there??

Before they recently introduced elk into the Upper Stave, and before the 'run by the river hydro project'
and the latest logging activity, I used to go there by canoe or cartop boat, then either walking, using a
mountain bike, or Honda 90 trail bike. I did well hunting deer, I saw a lot of cougar, some goats,
many black bears, one wolverine, and occasionally large elk tracks. Over the many years, although it was
obvious others were also going there, I never saw a soul once past the base camp at the head of the lake.
It was a great place to be by myself in wilderness not very far from the people masses. Once the 'run by
the river' project, the re-newed logging began, and the recent use of jet boats, I've never gone back.
It's just not the same, and the only reason I would go back is if I were to get a coveted LEH elk draw.
