How many got the earlier draw that you know of? I got the oct 15th-31 draw and I'm sort of hoping it will be a little quieter!
All are for sept and , rut hunts oct 1...14..

Send a pm with ph #..
For those with 5.15 hunts be very careful about boundries..some lost moose fines there last year.
I guided there for moose if suggestions are needed.
Cheers

Am I understanding this correctly? From the Draw Statistics posted

272 authorizations, (54/2633 Goat, 84/2085 Grizzly Bear, 82/4601 Mule Deer and 52/8730 Moose) were not awarded due to being undersubscribed (the total number of authorizations available exceeded the total number of applicants for that hunt).

Does this actually mean that 272 people got screwed because there were more options than applicants? Why would they not simply give all the applicants the draw rather than none? Either I am really confused (which is possible) or that feels like dirty pool.

basically these draws are really far away and no one wants them, or they have bad access like boat or plane only. If they award you a moose, and its in 6-22, you might be upset that you have to pay a $2000 plane charter to hunt it, and if you don't hunt it, your priority goes down for 3 years.

Hey guys first time posting. Doe draw for 3-14 and my second choice bull moose draw for 7-41 which was 0.1:1 odds last year. Looking at the map I see why, next to no access. This morning I was ready to write that one off but now getting kind of intrigued by the area so I will be doing a bit more research. My brother is a pilot so it may be time to talk nice to him haha...anyone been into that general area before? It's off the north east corner of Williston Lake.

normally I put in for good odds in hard to reach places but this year I put in for easy for me to reach places distance wise. Even though I am disappointed with getting nothing I knew full well that the odds were stacked against me odds wise and I think my best odds were like 6 to 1 for my sheep draw this year I still feel having the open lottery such as it is is still the fairest way. I doubt I will have the ability this year for a far north hunt with obligations time constraints etc but I will make the best of probably the best GOS in the world .

First time hunting in BC, shared hunt with another first time hunter... applied for a Bull Moose in 5-02a... denied
I thought we were stacking the odds rather well. A half moose is plenty for my family... lets see how many years I get denied before I give up trying. I can't help but wonder if they flagged our entry and are making us wait several years before being considered. One of the goals of leh has to be to discourage hunters and reduce the numbers.

When the draw was first implemented in Northern Onterrible decades ago, we went 10 consecutive years without being drawn before we gave up and quit moose hunting. My family is (was) 4 generations deep in hunting and the lottery system killed that tradition. I never tasted beef until I was 16 years old.

Both my partner and I did get an antlerless mule draw, however that was just thrown in to round out the hunt in case we saw one... Now we need to decide whether to hunt those tags in 5-02a or drive way the hell up north where there still is an open season for moose.

I have never hunted mule (blacktail) if anyone can point me to a good thread(s) or other web resource to learn up on it... would be much appreciated. Maybe even a tip specific to 5-02a...?

Go for a drive on some FSRs with cut blocks. Keep eyes open. Shoot mule doe.

It is as easy as going to Safeway, but way more fun.

lucky... I was going to apply to b but decided on a, as some friends are very familiar with it and we will share the camp at Valentine.

5-02b has some really prime habitat. Moose will need 3 basics - food (cut block browse), water (small lakes and ponds) and shelter (timber and swamp)... find all three close together and there will be game trails between them. I like to get away from the main roads to avoid the cruisers. Google earth is your friend... examine several likely spots and be prepared to move on if others are already set up in a location. I will be heading over to b to scout some areas I have my eye on for the future... in season is a good time to scout as you will figure out who is already hunting where.

Ten guys over last 5 years of applying for moose, that's approximately 50 chances, 3 tags. I'm beginning to think the enhanced odds deal is BS. Seven of us have not had a tag in 3 years and none successful. Won't recognize our moose area next time we go.

I feel like guys should have to post the odds of the various hunt codes they put in for with their complaint of not getting drawn.

Heck, I didn't get mine on what was 1.1:1. Granted who knows how many more people applied this year versus last. Those odds may have changed drastically.

It'd take a long time for me to get upset about not getting anything from 4:1 and up. At least 10 years. And even then, I'd think man does randomness hate me. ;-)

8:1 and an up really 18 years is when you should start to feel slighted.

At 8:1 you should expect to not be drawn 8 times to every 1 time you get drawn. Sure some guys get a better result, and the other get worse. Which is where the average of 8 to every 1 comes in.

Reduced odds doesn't mean no odds. I know guys who have binked multiple year draws on reduced odds.

Sure it stinks. But unless they are truly cooking the books in Victoria it is as fair as it can be.

Not to say I am at peace with the whole process...I don't what the answer is but I feel like a lot of the frustration is from the painful process and delays.

Lack of ability to review the results in more detail. Not see who got what but just get to see the numbers at the same time the results come out.

And maybe those are available and I didn't look hard enough.

And don't think I don't realize few want to hear this garbage right now. It is too soon! Maybe this just my way of coping of going 0 for 7. ;-)

Each draw is a mathematical singularity. You cannot extrapolate results and odds across multiple draws. Well, you can if you want to, but the math isn't going to follow your lead.

This is a common malfunction in the human brain. Don't feel bad.

For every year, it starts fresh. Using your example, for every 1 hunter that gets a draw, 8 hunters did NOT get a draw. And that is based on the number from the year previous, not the current year.

hare_assassin
07-10-2015, 04:02 PM
Lastcar, another way to explain it:

Each draw is unique and random, therefore what you end up with over time (and multiple draws) is random results which reflect the absolute best and worst case scenarios, and everything else in between.

Some people will never win, even after several decades.

Other people will win way more than they "should".

Some people will win once in a while, sometimes multiple years in a row, other times multiple years of not winning, etc. etc.

Other people will win for their first few years, and then never get another one. Others will wait for decades and then get a whole whack of them year after year.

Every combination is possible, and therefore you will hear examples of all of the above and more.

In other words, it is pure LUCK. There is no sense in trying to imagine better odds due to having applied so many times. It is mathematically irrelevant.

Lastcar

Right, I get that. In fact posted exactly that in another thread. No where near as well as hare_assasin did mind you. That should be made sticky at the top of LEH thread.

I was merely dummying it down. Maybe too far.

Mostly to counter the abundance of people going on about it being unfair about someone getting 3 draws and someone else getting none.

I did leave out the fact that odds will never remain consistent. Again, figured I wouldn't complicate the topic. I did reference that in my other post that I didn't get my goat tag, which was listed at 1.1:1 acknowledging that I have no idea how many more people put in for it. And that it'd be great to see those numbers sooner than next years synopsis.

I guess my point was just because you didn't get drawn one year doesn't mean your odds are any better the following years.

So get over it people. What happened last year, the 5, 10 or 40 years before have nothing to do with what you got this year.

It is fair. At least as far as the fact we all participate in the same system.

Just be happy for those that got a draw and enjoy the s%$t out of the best GOS options around.

There seems to be a recurring pattern when it comes to the draws i've read about. Seems to me that a lot of people have gotten awarded with multiple draws. Two, three, sometimes fours draws. There is no such thing as a random generator for a computer. If the computer 'sees' a number is has seen before, as in a successful draw, the odds are good that it will 'award' that number with another 'win'.

I remember your PM's from last year, thanks again for the info last year.

I was up by Marion Lake last year, camped out by the overgrown airstrip on the river, and on the beach by the lake.
The road in was fun, I did not have two vehicle to head in with so I braved it with one and managed fine, just took it slow and easy and it paid off.
Glad to be headed back in there this year, it helps knowing what's involved after being there.

Any does and don't s appreciated. I'm sure some of you will tell me to go "left after never-mind bridge and the up into Zippermouth Creek"

well we got our 2 bulls
first one was a 2 x 2, would have been a legal immature bull if they had an immy opening in region 5
second bull was a 3 x 3. also an immy by age but not by horn definition. Only other moose spotted was a cow and calf.
should be some good eating.

2 bull moose in region 5 with me, my son and my grandsons name on them. Last moose draw was 2010 but after 3 years of searching we got the unicorn last year.

I have often heard about a moose shortage..I can tell you the 7?? zone that the 3 of us had a LEH in as no shortage of moose. We got our 2 bulls and saw 23 cows ,14 with calves and 3 with 2 calves all in only 1 week..We also saw lots of wolf sign and heard them all night. There were not many hunters but 12 bulls taken in a 10 day period 6 by our camp tells me at least in this zone they are doing well despite the wolf numbers..Go figure. It was a very happy hunt camp this year.

Wow, I am sure late on this thread. I drew a December cow elk tag near Sayward. I can't wait!
