Have heard from a few guys how good these work, and decided to try one out.

My boat already planed pretty quick and ran nice but with just me in it I'd have to weight down the bow or it would really climb when coming up on step. Kinda the shits in rough water. Also would cavitate when turning sharp under full power and never could get rid of that no matter where I set the trim adjustment.

I bolted this thing on and holy crap... completely different boat. It literally jumps onto step, no bow rise, no cavitation in turns, and stays on plane at about 7-8 km/h slower than it used to. Also with the round chines on the boat it would really dig when making turns and walk up the chines. Now it turns like it's on rails, stays nice and flat. Planing that much slower made for a much better ride in rough water as well.

For $50 or whatever it cost, pretty good investment. I lost 2-3 km from the top speed but on a 16' fishing boat, who cares.

Hmmm.

My buddy put them on his boat.
We both run 14' with 30's.

Our annual fishing trip is a 5 day campout 20 miles up a lake, boat access only.

When we both load up and go he's up on a step (since he put them on) and I'm plowing. On the way out I'm faster as both boats have greatly reduced load due to all the beer consumed! (It's actually the fuel and ice that takes up a lot of the weight. Need 2 coolers of ice to keep the food cooler and beer cooler in check.

I'm getting a set for this year for sure!

Where's the best place to get them from? Or a good brand name?
Fitting them on a mid 90's Evinrude 30hp longshaft.

(Will have to probably internet order)

Shark Fin about $89. when I last seen one in Kamloops, have one on my 15 Honda on a 15 Smokercraft Alaskan and it does get up on plane real quick and then can back off on the throttle. does 32k which I think pretty impressive.

Mine is the Doel-Fin made by Davis Instruments. They're pretty well universal fit, but you might need an angle drill to drill your mount holes.

Bass Pro and Cabelas sell them. Ordered mine through Amazon, best price I found.

Thanks for the reply on where to find one. I'll track one down and let you know my results.

I have one for my 9.9 but never mounted it. If anyone wants it you can have it for 45 and am in Surrey. It is a Sting Ray Junior and white in color. All pieces are there and was never mounted although the packaging is opened

would they work in conjunction with a trolling plate?

would they work in conjunction with a trolling plate?

The Doel Fin is notched so it slips over the ventilation plate and clamps down from top & bottom when you bolt it down. Trying to mount a trolling plate in there as well might be ugly. I think you can get trolling plates that have fins attached already though. EasyTroller maybe?

I had a Boston Whaler with a 70 hp Merc on it and after putting the fin on noticed a big improvement.

I put a fin on my 115 yamaha pushing a 19 ft aluminum because of lots of weight on the back end with 2 batteries, 2 electric downriggers and big kicker. The difference was/is amazing with respect to pushing the bow down in chop. I can slow plane at around 18-19mph where 22-23mph was as slow as it would go before the bow would lift before I added the fin. I also lifted the mounting position of the motor by a hole and it also helped keep the bow-lift down. It did reduce my top speed by 1.5mph though.

Stole my response. Same boat, motor and rigging. Love being able to vary the power in rough water without falling off step.
