Headed up that way next week for 10 days bear huntin. Curious on if anyone has any insight on the fishing in tutshi? Can't find to much on google. Appreciate any input. Cheers.

Can't say I have but I don't see it being much different than the fishing in neighboring Tagish lake (which google has a lot of info about). Again I have never fished either but the info about Tagish is most likely applicable for Tutshi.

I would say unless you have a boat and some trolling gear out there you won't be able to drum up much lake trout action. If I were in your position I would bring a light spinning rod or fly rod (5 weight at a max) and work inlet stream mouths for greyling.

If legal in the regs a hook baited with bacon on a bottom fishing setup will produce for lake trout as long as you can cast to deep water from shore.

Pretty sure that is legal as long as he is attending the rod at all times. Set lines, however, are not legal.

tutshi can be good.
it's a friend's main laker lake, he's been fishing it for over 30 years.
lake's usually aren't ice-free until the beginning of june.

Thanks guys. We will have a boat and a ton of fishin gear, laker and grayling, but no depth sounder or fish finder. The ice just melted off a week or two ago, I'd imagine it will be a bit murky and hi water, iv herd there's some big lakers to be had, would a guy be better long lining on the top or going deep I wonder? anyone know if there's lingcod also??

Very pretty lake. I haven't fished there for about 25 years. Some small sandy beaches accessible from the Skagway road. There used to be an informal campground on the lake. I had good enough luck casting from shore at those spots with pixies etc. to eat fresh lake trout more times than not. Ice is off all of the lakes early this year. If you are boating beware of the wind. It can be very dangerous on those lakes.

Lakers will be in the top 30' of water by the time you get there, following the bait fish to the surface as they feed on their food. 5" chrome Canadian Wigglers, 6" white Apex, 5" 600 Tomic Plugs and big Rapala Husky Jerks all have worked the lakes in that area. Don't worry about a sounder, just fish off the points and reefs or about 50' off shore. We used 6-8oz slip weights and 35-50 pulls to start and adjust accordingly.

Prime time will be just starting before the water warms up. With the early spring, the ice has probably been off a couple weeks already.

Good luck and let us know how you made out....fishing and hunting.

Cheers

Not true! Set lines are legal in region 6, but only for burbot......certain restrictions are set for hook size, etc.

I was sheep hunting in there 17 years ago. We only had 8 horse motors on 14' alluminums so everywhere we went, we pretty much trolled. Caught a lot of lakers with 3 oz slip weights on a williams wabbler spoon. All were between 3 and 8 lbs. Good luck, but as said the lake can get very rough real fast!

Just out the door, thanks guys!! The good old Williams wobbler hey? Just so happens the fellow that's coming with me, I won his best WW in a crib match years ago, I'll be sure to test that one out first! Lol. With any luck I'll have some photos to share once I get back, fingers crossed for big lakers on tight lines and possibly a big ol grizz. Cheers all.

Thanks for all the input fellas. No bears, but managed to scout out a bunch of rams! Fishing was double header char all day long ( had to reel up the lines so we had time to glass), nothing over 4lb tho, but very good eating, meat was as red as a rainbow trout. I highly recommend the trip even for anyone looking to vacation, amazing scenery! And a pile of critters, just no bears. I'll certainly be going back

Actually, that a lie sorry. 39 bears in total, only one bb that was in the area we were hunting, the rest on the highway. Only seen one grizzly sow with a couple cubs, bout 20 km out of white horse.

Glass every day?? you were fortunate!!! Spent some time up that way and got pushed around by the wind with only a 12' boat.

I am quite surprised you didn't see a grizz. I have been there twice and saw two bears each trip. Off tutshi.

looks like you had impresive weather thou!!!

Im very surprised we dident see much for bears, we glassed until our eyes felt like they were going to explode lol. It never actually got dark, a little dusk around 1-2am, a few nights we glassed up until about midnight, thinking the bears were out in the late evening. The weather was over +20 everyday pretty much, and spring came a few weeks early compared to most years the local guys had mentioned. All the slides and mountain sides were greened right up, there was a lot of cover for a bear to hide in. I really thought we would pick something up along them grassy hillsides at the other end of the lake, but dident see a thing. We hiked most of the way to moon lake before my partners knee started bugging him, we seen one grizzly track on that trail, but that was the only one.

Something we did see tho, was grizzly hair floating in the lake, and about 50 yards passed it was some goat hair floating, not sure if it was just winter shed blowing off the mountains or if maybe a bear and a goat had an encounter on the lake shore somewhere.

Great post, awesome pics, wish I had seen it before you went. That lake is usually just 1 big windstorm after another. Most of the black bears hang out along the highway. The big trout are usually caught by trolling in from the deep to the shallows and caught in less than fifteen feet of water (rather than just trolling along the drop-offs ).
Picture of the grizz looks like it was taken just a few kliks from where I live. 3 different sow grizz cub combos in the area again this year.

Your very right, all of the fish we caught were right where the shallows drop off into the deep, about 20-40 yards off shore, we tried bigger lures in deeper water with no luck. Along the highway between the US boarder and the Yukon boarder there was a lot of bear scat, but we only seen a few smaller blackies along that stretch, between good hope and the meziadin junction there were bears all over. Out of the 29 bears, not one would break the 6' mark I don't think, and, not a single this years cub, a few that looked like they had just been kicked out, but no new borns.

The grizz was about 15-20 km south of Whitehorse on that Klondike hwy, seemed like she was pretty use to people, we had to stop and wait for her to get off the road lol.

I use the biggest lures possible (gibbs # 8 half n half or bigger)so as not to spend time reeling in and unhooking the little ones (my friends usually outfish me 3 to 1 with smaller lures). The Shallows at the ends of the lake and around the coved in area halfway down and on the west side late at night for anyone going there in the future
