Came across this today while at the Winchester web site.

Winchester is warning and recalling some 22LR ammo lots that might contain double powder charges!

Note that the lot numbers are stamped without ink and thus hard to read and is not the carton number that is printed in ink on the other box tab.

Check your ammo!

PRODUCT WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE: WINCHESTER® WILDCAT® 22 & WINCHESTER® XPERT® 22

4/6/2007

Olin Corporation, through its Winchester Division, is recalling several lots of its WILDCAT® 22 (Symbol Number WW22LR) and XPERT® 22 (Symbol Number XPERT22) 22 Long Rifle rimfire ammunition.

Lot Numbers containing Letters: XN, YA, YB or YC

Through extensive evaluation Winchester has determined the above lots of WILDCAT® 22 and XPERT® 22 ammunition may contain double powder charges. Double powder charge weight ammunition may cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable, and subject the shooter to a risk of personal injury and/or death when fired.

DO NOT USE WINCHESTER® WILDCAT® 22 RIMFIRE AMMUNITION WITH LOT NUMBERS CONTAINING LETTERS XN, YA, YB or YC. The ammunition Lot Number is imprinted (stamped without ink) on the outside of the right tuck flap of the 50-round box, as indicated here:

To determine if your ammunition is subject to this notice, review the Lot Number. If the Lot Number contains the letters XN, YA, YB or YC return the ammunition to Winchester via United Parcel Service (UPS). Securely pack the ammunition into a corrugated cardboard box, write “CARTRIDGES, SMALL ARMS ORM-D” on the outside, and ship to:

Olin Corporation – Winchester Division
Tile Warehouse
Powder Mill Road, Gate 4A
East Alton, IL 62024

Didnt know it had the case capacity to double charge a .22 rimfire? i wonder how they perform if fired? What are the pressures ? Velocity? If they are indeed double charged could this be a bit of insite into the potential of the 22 rimfire without going to a 22mag .
Questions that swim in my head that will probably never be answered unless winchester wants to release a super duper .22 rimfire premium ammo  for non semi auto rifles (imagine a regular .22 going at 2000 fps with a 40 g pill :) )
dare to dream i guess

If you have ever taken one apart they could easily hold a double charge.

HMM i always thought they were filled to capacity. i remember in an old outdoor life that they mentioned the the cciStinger had more available room for more powder because it had a lighter shorter bullet allowing for a bigger charge. it could very well have been a pr hype or the limitations of the powder used at that time.

It wouldnt make sense for them to release the very best ammo they could as it would hamper thier ability to introduce new and improved products at a later date.
