Went out in my yard to take advantage of the sun and wash up my truck for my upcoming hunt. My lab and Airedale were hanging out in the yard with me. I glance over and see my lab foaming at the mouth and looking "prickly". I quickly check the Airedale as she is usually the troublemaker and she is unscathed. A few minutes with the pliers was enough for me to decide a visit to the vet was in order. Hope he has learned to avoid these critters as in 2 weeks we are spending a week in heavy porcupine territory.

We live on 5 acres in north PG and see lots of animals on my property but this was the first porcupine I have come across here so far. I looked all over for him but couldn't find him. Hopefully he leaves the area before the Airedale finds him!

I used to hunt around upper fraser and seen lots of porcupine out there. Hope the dog is ok but I doubt he learned his lesson.

I can't believe that lab just sat there with those quills hanging out of his face. I'v had two labs that have gotten in to porkies out in Alberta. Removing the quills I was bitten both times, but after you get the last one out you get big licks of thanks. Always carry a leatherman when I'm in porky country or coyote snare country.

That's not bad at all, you got off pretty lucky.
Depending on his temperament he may have learned a lesson or developed a hate
Next time will tell.

Silly pooch! Is that just drool on his muzzle and above his eye or scaring?

If you spray the quills with PAM and only PAM, the quills soften and they are easy to pull out. You can be nice and use the butter flavour for your pooch

Poor Pup. Glad he didn't get them in the eyes

Proves that labs will eat anything... Probably why you couldn't find the porky.

I had a Golden Retriever came home looking the same. We removed (Vet removed) all quills. However one was in the throat, they had to operate to remove it. And another they missed in the throat. This quill 'migrated' through the soft tissue and came out the top of the eye socket three days later.

That's slober on his face in the picture. Quills migrating is why I took him to the vet, just to be sure. I had a lab 20 years ago get his face sewn shut by a porcupine. Right threw his lips and into his tongue. He was a sorry sight. I had to go intervene this morning when a momma moose came out of the treeline to chase my dogs in the yard. One look at me and she bolted but the dogs were gonna get it!

It could have been a lot worst,I hope your dog learn something from all this.
