well as the title says there was a grizzly spotted here in the lower mainland by the local CO. it was spotted right near my mom's 5 acre property that I have trail cams on for blacktails and black bears if I get a pic of the grizzly I'll posted it asap. In all the years we've had lots of black bears on the property but never a color faze bear. I'm thinking it's just a big color faze but hopefully I can get a pic of this bear.

Oh Wow!!! Where is it??? I want to take my kids to see it, and get some close up pictures of all of them petting it!!! Jeez, maybe we'll put gob's of honey all over the kids hands and the grizzly can lick it off well I get some cool video's!!! I'll be the first one to post them on facebook!!! This is great! Do the CO's charge anything for the kids to touch the bears? If so, do they take Debit???

I was under the impression there are grizzlies at the north end of Pitt Lake. Surely one could have made it over to Maple Ridge

If they swim to the island occasionally theres no question one could hike its way over here. Its kinda prime habitat for them too

it was spotted by 232nd and fern crescent and we quite often have sightings of elk that make there way down from pitt lake I saw 2 nice bulls 2 years ago right on lougheed Hwy beside the hyundai dealership. and friend of mine lives on old dewdney and has the elk there every now and again.

ya there's new subdivision up the hill and maple ridge spray park is right there. I know the CO and he's a pretty knowledgeable guy he does hunt moose and elk up north and has had encounters with gizzs before so I trust his judgement but it still seems odd to me that's why I'm putting out more cams

Well, about 35 years ago when they were still logging the east side of Stave Lake
around Sayres and Kenyon Lake the employees and drivers repeatedly saw a grizzly
in the area. The CO went in and found plenty of it's tracks to confirm their
stories. During this time a young fellow took a shot at it with a 30-30. He thought
he had wounded it but when a couple of loggers and I followed it's tracks for quite a
distance we couldn't find any blood or sign that it was stressed. All we found was
it's tracks as it turned over logs and ripped open rotten stumps as it looked for grubs etc.

Lots of good humour on this thread

I wouldn't be surprised. They are all around Maple Ridge, so why wouldn't they be in Maple Ridge.

Im on the bottom(northside) of 232 and I have seen a color phase twice in my backyard. One was a cub and the other was an adult, two different occasions. We reported the first sighting to the CO because of the cub hanging around. I will keep an eye out because there is always bears in the backyard.

Is that comment humor? I've heard of them up around the Skagit in Hope, around Chilliwack Lake, the top end of Pitt, Alouette and Stave Lakes and up in Squamish but this is the first mention I've heard of them being in Maple Ridge. It is quite a distance from those places to Maple Ridge. Is it possible? Sure. As mentioned in a previous post the transplanted elk from the top end of Pitt and Stave are occasionally seen here but in the 25+ years that I have lived here I have not seen nor heard of them being "all around here".

A very good friend of mine, an experienced hunter that grew up in Prince rupert swears he saw one on his street on the way to work. It was about 6 years ago. This was on 266th near lougheed.

Not surprising . . . the Eco-tourism industry is growing and this bear hasn't seen or tasted granola since last October! ;). Wait till the NDP shut down the grizz hunt and the Bears have no fear.

Seen 3 in hope and seen tracks in chilliwack I am 95% sure were grizz. Grizz are in the mountains in the lower mainland just not in high numbers in my opinion.

I am no longer surprised when a species shows up in an area they are not normally reported

Terry worked for Canfor about that time. He told us about stopping the logging truck for mountain goat a few times. Not much about bears. It was also gated. The good ole days.

I could get permission to go in there past the gates. That was during the time I was walking
logging roads all day long any chance I could to cure a circulation and pinched nerve problem.
I often got to talk to the loggers during their lunch breaks etc. I might be a bit off on the years.
It could have been earlier. I do remember that they were currently logging the extreme
west side south of Kenyon Lake when the bear was seen and shot at on the north side of Sayres Lake.

I spoke with one of the logging managers that was working in the Sowerby Creek area in Hope. I was asking about hiking access roads to some mountain at the end of the valley, he gave me lots of good info and informed me of a grizzly in the valley they had seen on multiple occasions.

I hunt coyotes in Ontario a lot. Well I used to when I lived there up until a few years ago. I have seen a number of coydogs in packs. The coyotes in Ontario are not really coyotes there are none in Ontario. They have completely been cross bred with wolves. They still call them coyotes though or brush wolves to the locals. There are pure strain wolf populations in Ontario but they are relegated further north in Ontario. this picture doesn't look like anything I have ever seen.

so this pic was taken in brackendale I take it, back in the day I had a lot of native buddies who had dogs that were part wolf, especially the guys that lived in upper squamish area like cheakamus. My girlfriends dog was a shepherd/wolf mix, the thing was huge and freakin crazy. The dog in the pic looks part wolf to me.
