Took the new to me Yamaha 20hp out and she wasn't a happy motor.
Runs fine flat out and the gal will idle down for a bit and then gets
all fussy.
Pop it in neutral and hi idle to clear out the oil.
Mosquito control for sure.
The book calls for 100:1 mix, but I don't dare get that skinny on oil.
I figured I had the 50:1 leaned out a fair bit, but the exhaust smoke
tells me different.
My 30 is oil injected, so no issues there.
My 8hp Johnson will go a bit longer on this mix before I need to clear it out.

What are you guys using for oil and what mix are you using?
I may decide to burn premium and go to using Ams oil, if I can find it.
Seemed to work well back in my water skiing days with the 115 Mariner.
Never had a smoke/idle issue.
Mind you, back then there was so little idling ............

I've got a 20hp yamaha as well, a 2005. It's hard on the mind to run 100:1 but it's the way to go. I usually still run a little bit rich on oil just because I'm paranoid, but pretty darn close to the recommended mix.

I also run the ams oil and she seems like a pretty happy motor to me.

Cheers,
Brad

Should also add, I buy ams oil 2 stroke stuff from Canadian tire. I think it's 14 bucks or so a quart but it lasts plenty long at 90 or 100 to 1

reread the manual, it says 100:1 for a reason any thicker and you are going to damage the engine, it will change the flash point and change timing slightly which is hard on the bottom end.

Why would you run a motor rated for 100:1 at 50:1 and then ask why it doesn't run correctly?

If the book says 100:1, run 100:1

I run my 15 HP YAMAHA at 100-1 with AMSOIL and Prem Pump Fuel (not Dyed) its goe's good - idles and trolls well to very little smoke except after a long time trolling ! RJ

I have a 9.9 and it says 100 to 1 but I, like you am leery of that so I run it at about 75-80 to 1. Runs great for a 2007 and usually fires on the 1st pull even after sitting for 6 months.

Thanks for the tip on where to find AMS oil.
No idea CT sold it.
And no, regardless of what the manufacturer recommends, until I'm satisfied
with the oil I'm using, I'd rather keep it fat.
I'll make a venture to CT and see if I can find this AMS oil.
If so, I'll run it slightly under man's spec's.

Thanks for the head's up.

I have a 8 HP Johnson that i use mostly for trolling - its a factory 50-1 mix BUT i use 100-1 Amsoil with Prem gas in it too and NEVER has it being a problem and OH no smoke hardley at all ! I also mix use the AMSOIL 100-1 MIX in my powersaws without any problem (STILHS) I have used AMSOIL for over 25 years now - i REALLY believe in it ! RJ

Don't forget the more oil you run is displacing fuel so now your not fat your actually lean.

Keep gumming up your mix with too much oil and you won't get it to run properly at best, and as said will be doing damage over time. But you say your mind is made up so best get used to it running lumpy and have a spare if you go far :)

well, why'd you even bother asking everyone's opinion if you knew you didn't want it in the first place?
the thing is designed to run on a 100:1 mixture.
the reason yours is running rough is because you are ignoring that.
look forward to reading your threads asking "why did my motor die?", "looking for a new motor, what brand do you guys recommend?", etc.

That is an important key. make sure you buy gas WITHOUT ETHENOL I think chevron supreme is the only one but its worh it to save your carb

Maybe you shouldn't draw your own conclusions.
Read my reply slooooowly.
I will try and find this Amsoil if CT does in fact sell it and
go forth from there.
Go wash your face.................

This. You may well be lubing your engine's bottom end to excess, but the higher combustion temps from a lean burn aren't doing your top end any favours, unless you've actually re-tuned the engine for 50:1.

Run a decarbonizing cycle with sea foam. Lots of info on it on google.

Amsoil is no longer carried by Canadian Tire.
Just called and it's on their inactive list.
Lordco sells Lucas and Royal Purple.
Dang.

Dirtbike shops sell amsoil, not sure if bike and outboard mix would be different but that's all I used to use in my bikes and it had little to no smoke at all.

I run an 8hp Yamaha 2 stroke@ about 75:1 with premium fuel and AMSoil since 1998 or so. Seems to work for me...

Royal Purple is a good oil too.

As Brambles mentioned a seafoam 'shock treatment' can make a huge difference, especially in a motor with lots of carbon build up.

I found enough to last this season.
How does one use seafoam?
I filled a can with premium which should already have a bunch
of additives in it?

Well for those of you that are losing sleep over this thread,
I did the 100-1 mix and much much better.
Need to run some sea foam as suggested to clear out the rest
of the crudd in there.
