and interest in the upcoming bear season I thought it would be appropriate to post this story from Castanet. It a sad story but may have had a different outcome if she was a little more aware about ticks. Anyhow, it's a what not to do and occurred at Logan Lake as you will read.

It's sad that the Government of Canada does not recognize Lymes Disease. Perhaps we should get on the wagon and try to change that.

Thanks for posting that, Jag. We're certainly more prone than a lot of other groups.

Pretty sad story that's for sure. Recognizing the symptoms early is the key.

And a reminder that ticks can come out early. I got one on my hat after sitting in 2' of snow and leaning against a fir tree to glass a bear that SSS was making a stalk on.

Lymes is bad, beware those f'in ticks!

Yes it's a bitch. Avril Lavigne has also been battling lyme disease and was bedridden for 6 months.

I have a cousin that got Lymes disease years ago. Led to all sorts of complications.

He was a PFRA cowboy in the prairies. The tick almost killed him.

He's got a new liver and kidneys now but still has a tough time walking with special boots and can only load 2 shells at a time in his rifle because his hands are so weak. Sad stuff.

They mention that a lyme disease vaccine was discontinued in 2002 due to lack of interest. I wonder it could be brought back. Especially if Canada finally decides to recognize it. With more and more people going into the woods, and more and more awareness I bet the interest would be a lot higher.

It's sad but you gotta drive the bus yourself - don't let yourself get brushed off by Dr's and don't brush it off yourself.

my SIL is down to 80lbs and right messed up because she thought she had properly removed a tick over a year ago. She blamed symptoms that came months later on a parallel issue and never even considered the tick. Right now we're just hoping she can come out of it alive - stage 5 with the disease in her brain...

My dad had lyme disease as well. Luckily they caught it early enough to not do any permanent damage.

I never heard of that vaccine. I would pay for it though. Just like I paid for the TwinRx shots. Lymes shots should be made available to forest workers. Imagine if someone got Lymes Disease and managed to get compo for it. That'll be the day, I know. Then maybe Worksafe BC would help the push.

A good friend of mine has been bed ridden coming into his second year now......whether lyme was/is the culprit is unknown, they do know it was mis-diagnosed and denied in the beginning but more tests a year later after a lot of prompting on his families part proved that it is in his system.

A bit of the info (some consider conspiracy) and possible origin of Lyme disease. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plum_Island_Animal_Disease_Center

My aunt has had Lyme disease for many years now. They wouldn't even test her for it in Canada she paid big bucks in the states.she gets treatment at a private clinic near Courtney that get her out of bed for a couple months at a time.
I watched a documentary about line in the states.insurance company's and the medical societies way to cure lymes is three months of antibiotics but with many cases it comes back. One doctor started treating with the antibiotic for over a year and was able to bring many people back from the brink of death. But the insurance companies where loosing money so they had the doctor arrested and he lost his license. The greed and head in the sand in the pharmasutical and medical community is the saddest part of lymes.

My brother has exact same issue with Lyme disease, and his daughter did a lot of research on it. He got bit while living in Nova Scotia, and the doctors in BC will not recognize it, those that do COULD lose their license. There is a female doctor from Montreal who owns and operates a Lyme's clinic in New York because she is not allowed to do it in Canada.
He used to be a faller, but now needs 2 canes to get around, and cannot get a disability pension for it. He did the 3 months of heavy anti-biotics, but it never really improved. Seems the only hope for victims of the deer tick is to have enough money to go to the States for treatment
