Jus got back from the weekend hunt. Not much bear activity on this part of the province yet but I did see two. I'm gonna make this one into sausage. Pics are in my gallery.

Thanks, it wasn't the biggest bear but I wanna do a full mount so it'll save me some cash. I was just driving around when i spotted it walking down the road. Watched it for a bit and then I took him. The rifle I used is an M14.

You mean it's a real M14 not an M305?

OK guys, knock off the negative comments. I don't make negative comments on the choice of rifle or camo you use so why should you do it to him? At least he's out there hunting instead of sitting behind the keyboard making derogative remarks.

Good on you 4 Pointer! Nice color phase bear.

A bears a bear and you got him! Good shooting.

My M305 hasn't got M305 engraved on it anywhere but it does have M14. It is a non-restricted semi-auto 308. (most of the time.) No need for anymore Zumbo's.

I love my M305 but haven't taken anything with it yet. Maybe some day when I go hunting in Alberta I'll bring it with me. That thing is just excellent for long range targets.

Nice color on that bear! I notice you said you were going to lifesize it... What pose were going to do?

Only a matter of a few weeks now and this site will have bear, after bear, after bear... :)

Happy Hunting!

Thanks guys! My brothers and I were heading out of our area. As we were driving, I spotted him at a distance sitting on an embankment above the road so I told my brother to stop. We watched him for a bit and then moved closer for a shot. He was broadside and about 40 yrds looking straight at me when I fired the first shot. The first shot sliced his lower belly spilling his intestines. He was spinning violently and looked like he was pulling out his intestines. I fired a second shot hitting his lower back. I then went into about 10 yards and fired a another round piercing both shoulders. He then collapsed immediately and fell down the embankment and landed several yrds from me. His intestines were tangled on all four legs. For ammo, I used 168 gr Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip. I am thinking of a standing up pose for the mount, but I'll have to go look at some mounts to make a final decision. As for size, he was only about approx. 100 pds field dressed. Two of us were able to pick him up and put him in the back. The other bear I saw was a blackie (and big) and would of been nice but I wanted a brown bear for a good mount.

You know...Maybe you should spare us some of the gory details....

And double check your rifles point of impact at ranges at 25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards out to however long you intend to shoot on game.

Sometimes things don't work out the way we plan - Glad you got him.
This is the 1st Bear that I know of that has been taken. Many folks haven't been seeing a whole hell of a lot yet. What MU were you hunting?

lols...I'll keep it simple next time. Rifle is fine, just gotta work on shooting her more to get used to the peep sights.

Congrats on the bear. Not trying to be mean but I would do as Gatehouse suggested in his post. But I am glad he was down and no wounded animal is always a good thing. Congrats again....and post pics of the mount when it's done

Good to know that you're man enough to realize/identify you're mistakes. Get shooting that gun at some targets and don't let history repeat itself.

I forgot to add in my earlier post;

CONGRATS!

Is the MU top secret confidential?

Congratulations!

As Mr. Dean points out mistakes are just fine so long as we realize what went wrong and correct it for next time. Your not the only one on this site who's botched a shot at game, I have, and I know most others here have before too. It's just a matter of heading to the range and planning shots on the next critter.

Congrats again.

What mistake was made? The animal was killed and recovered in a fairly timely manner. Many aren't, and are still written about.

I think the point is ,it shouldnt take 3 shots to hit the vitals on a 40 yard broad side shot.If he was hunting grizzly we might be reading a different story. At least he realizes his mistake and will take his rifle to the range prior to his next hunt.Nice color bear, I am happy you got him.

BrowningBar
04-10-2007, 07:33 PM
It doesn't always need to be hit in the vitals, its all about getting the damn thing, not where it hits, some people i know can't even hit at 40 yards with a scope.

The first bullet did hit the lungs too but sliced open the belly while exiting taking out a few ribs, probably because of the angle I was shooting. The second shot was taken while the bear was spinning. The third shot was taken when the bear seemed to almost expire. I'm use to shooting my Abolt with a scope so the sights is something to improve on. At the range, its no problem but after watching a shooter for a few minutes, adrenaline sure kicks hard.

Why does that bear have no hair on its face?

Marc
04-11-2007, 09:40 PM
Some bears shed their hair over th winter in strange places. He could have been rubbing his face all winter. You should see the picture of the one that Gatehouse got last year now that thing looked strange.

StevenYour comment was kind and wise, I agree completely!I once showed a picture of my first shep to a"famous" hunter who commented it wasn't bad for a resident hunter, and then regalled with with tales of all his 40" plus rams.
