Defender Shotgun

If you have a 12 guage defender that holds seven shells can you have it filled up when you are out hiking and just want it for protection or do you need a plug in it as you would when you're out hunting?

I think the plug is for Hunting only and they may have changed it this year. Go to the regs and thay will tell you for sure. Or someone here will probably know.
