Just thought I'd share some of my elk porn before I delete it all. I'v been using the cheap simmons trail cams, 4mp I think. started with 4 and had one stolen over 3 years. not to bad in my opinion. There is a major learning curve on where to put the cameras and salt licks. Some areas I have tried out with huge hopes and had nothing come by the cam, and other spots surprised me with the about of game. I've got two salt licks established with the elk visiting on a regular basis. Mostly at night and not regular enough to hunt on them but it gives me a good idea of the bulls in the area. I just got two more cams with time lapse and can't wait to try those out on some larger spots I think the game is traveling.

This next buck came in 3 weeks before opening day and he hung around licking salt for 2 days and was never seen again. he haunts my dreams....

any guesses on the score of this guy?
not sure if its he has a small head and body or a big rack.

If you don't mind my asking, what are you using for salt? Blocks? Water softener salt?

870
04-07-2015, 08:38 PM
I use the blue(cobalt) and brown (trace mineral) salt. I buy a bag of each and spread 20lbs of each onto the ground and let the animal choose what it wants. the bags cost around $12/50 lbs at westway feed in delta but I'm sure you can buy them at any feed store. after it rains a bit the salt is absorbed into the dirt which they continue to eat. I reapply salt every spring on my good spots. I'll also dump half a bag of COB every once and a while. corn, oats, barley, and molasses to draw them to the salt. $12/50lb bag, but you don't want to do this on spots with bears in the area, as they will come in and sit on the spot for 3 days till they lick every bit up keeping the other game out.

Great pics! Seems like a lot of happy Elk. Love the cats too. I use the Simmons 4MP as well (and one 6MP because I couldn't source anymore cheap 4MP's locally) ... good cams, I have 4 and they seem to hold up to all the mixed Region 2 weather just fine. My Moultrie cam lasted a couple weeks of summer before it took on a mind of its own. Took it out because I was worried it might actually start a forest fire.

This is the first year I put out big bags of water softener salt, mineral bricks and molassis. I was utterly shocked there was nothing on 2 of the 3 cams that I currently have out after 3 weeks. Last year I just smeared a little peanut butter around and had lots of action.

Thank you. I think I'll try to set up a lick on my place somewhere. Hopefully I can find somewhere that the animals like and the trespassers won't find.....

Thanks 870, great shots.

One question, does your meat taste salty?

haven't shot anything over the salt licks. I use them to tell me whats in the area, the elk only come around once a week, sometimes in the middle of the night. I'd have to sit in a stand above it for a month to get a shot at something.
