this is the new pattern..still some refinements coming..so Daiichi 1130 #10 scud hook 1xl..then some partridge for extending from head and rear..then some 2 # nylon leader for segmentation...then some uv dub light olive spinning dub loop over the lead tapered body...some lead foil plastic body wrap..I did cut some squirrel tail into the mix for some added legs but not enough blend so far..the dubbing is too blue?? or maybe just the flash..looks not so bad in life...will try more yellow blend next couple ties..

Nice work Steve , sometimes wrapping the lead around the hook shank will cause the hook to ride upside down , which will still work unless you run into picky trout . Wrapping a strip of lead or lead putty on the underside of the hook can sometimes help , a bead head can also be good. I have seen bluish colored shrimp and I like the color . I have also had success using blues or pearlescent as an attractor when the naturals are a darker olive or even grayish.

hmmm there is a various coloring..the blue you refer to are the freshly molted shrimp...once they lose their exoskeleton in the growth cycle they are blue ...blue grey for a short time...
when you find a yellow shrimp...geriatric..they are aged and have lost their ability to produce the green color to match them to their water lake bottome..

Sometimes there is a orange band in the middle, some have suggested this is a egg sack of pregnant shrimp...others this is a intestinal parasite ...wrapping lead has not been an issue..still catch plenty of trout..

one of my patterns uses a gold bead and then uv goo......thank you for the comments..appreciate the feedback..

cheers

HMMM I put chronomids off till the end...I am starting using the UV resin..still not used to the stuff...couldn't find the clear pearl for the top of the head..that teaches me to live in THE best flyfishing location on earth...but the shittiest shopping..

cheers

Try putting that shrimp into a 5 gallon bucket of water to see if it tames down. I do this with some of my patterns to get an underwater feel for them. After a couple feet, all colours show differently. Nice job though.

Hmmm slowly the new scud pattern is coming together, as was suggested I tied .30 lead only on the underside of the shank..added 2x the squirrel tail to the dubbing blend..the little legs now do show up..added a teeeeeeeny bit of Loon Uv epoxy light..over the shell back..and switched out to smaller partridge feathers...also changed out hooks to 2x heavy gauge...2x eye size..lots of experimentation...figured out things that dont work...then get the pattern right? Then increase the tying speed..

Will post final pattern tomorrow..

beauty flys.

the version of olive bugger i have great success with, has copper or brass barbell head on it.
not sure if others would work just as well since i've stuck to the style that's been hot.
certain lakes, it seems the fish can be very picky.
i also have a lake where the fish only want a muddler minnow with a silver cone head.
another factor i guess could be the heads are providing extra weight and getting them down to a different zone.

Could be...I've usually done well with a few dragonfly patterns over the years, but since switching over
to barbell heads I have done even better with the same patterns.
