Time for first blood beers.

Got out on the hard water today with my brother. It was a 10km sled ride in. We doubled on my brothers 2005 rmk. He's 6'9" and I'm 6'2"... so it was a bit of an adventure. Overloaded and and shitty snow conditions made handling non-existent. So there was a couple of blunders along the way. Making it a long ride in.

We finally got to our spot. We noticed that we hadn't recovered all our gear on one of our crashes. So my brother went on a recovery mission. That's when I noticed the auger...

https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/10636031_10155176608970387_6510612113135242397_n.j pg?oh=1106649d0a71ffc345ee24f226997615&oe=56470402

So managing to get through the ice was a bit of a chore. As soon as I got my bait below the ice I had a decent sized fish hitting my bait. He didn't hook up though. About 20 minutes late I had another checking out my bait then took off towards my brothers hole. Right away my brother had a fish hit his bait hard.

(can't seem to get the video on here)

It was pretty slow for the next little bit. I decided that'd I'd go get some wood to get a fire going. Just as I reached the shoreline, I looked back and seen my rod bent over. I hollard at my brother. He ran over to my rod to start the fight while I gum booted her back. I played him out and landed this guy.

24" with some colour. But he'll cook up just fine.

It was pretty slow for a bit longer. My brother ended up releasing a little guy. Then the weather changed and we started seeing fish consistently. Lots of chewers but couldn't get any to hook up.

It was a good day and there'll be some first blood beers of 2015.

Nice fish. Ice auger had a bit too much already.
It was $174 to fix my Eskimo power auger. Slush + skimmer tip over = busted off cast aluminum handles and broken carb air funnel. Fixed and running now again. Expensive outing. Oh and I couldn't drill a hole to even wet a line.

A little update...

Back in May, went and fished the McLeod River in Alberta with some friends. Of course with my trout gear, I didn't touch a thing. Stu... the only rookie fisherman landed the only two fish of the day

We discussed the next trip and I told them I'd only go if there's was trout kicking around... none of this ditch fish business...

So July long weekend I made the trek to Sundre Alberta (sucks when most of your friends are in the Calgary area)... We hit the Red Deer River. I was tired from the trip and only really fished the one day. The water was murky and a little high. On top of that I didn't really know the river. Managed to dangle in some embarrassing sized bulls... but they said "hey... you wanted trout".... I'll have to tell them bigger than a mini cut-plug next time...

Made a trip to meet up with my buddy Be Rad a few weeks ago to do some trout fishing. Gorgeous looking trout river. Hammered it hard from sun up until 1ish. Not even a nibble. So we headed for lunch.

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/12038121_10156077657950387_3398513084897600756_n.j pg?oh=4d2827bebeccbd6807dada7ab0113c1b&oe=56874067

After lunch we tried another part of the river, except we climbed down a bank and couldn't wade out very far. So we were reluctantly forced to spinning gear. First cast Be Rad was into one and drug this slough shark in.

Now that we figured it was full of ditch fish so moved to another spot of the river where we could lace into them with the fly rods. We were into the sauger, but it slowed down.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtp1/v/l/t1.0-9/12003361_10156077659215387_205475167314591063_n.jp g?oh=5fbf99dda61a469617c62c808f6a484f&oe=56887C61

So we hit up a gross ass lake and hammered little pike for an hour until the bite was off at 8:30ish.

A good friend of mine decided she wanted to get married on halloween. So I was thinking about making a fishing odyssey out of it.

Wedding is in Sechelt, so my idea is burn to Little fort wednesday night, fish the north thompson, down and over to salmon arm, down to princeton and over to the lower wasteland for friday night. Then spend the 2nd and 3 rd fishing my way back.

Thoughts?

Sounds like a great plan, and awesome pics...any more deer tags to fill this year?? For ice fishin do you even bother with lures, or just hook and worm?? I've always used lures but I wonder if there's any point..

I have two tags to fill... 3 if you include whitetails. I also have a moose draw that ends in 6 days that I won't hunt a day of.

Just shrimp and a hook icefishing. One guy I know taught me to hang a bell sinker 8" off my hook and bounce it off the bottom. Seems to work.

The split shot work too. But when you have a bell sinker off your hook, you can bounce it off the bottom and stir it up, fish think something is rising out of the bottom and hit it hardder. So it seems.

I'm off to another part of region 5 the last week of november to chase big bucks and flat tops. Unless I can convince NorBC to try and stick a deer.

On the 26th, got out to "Dugan". My brother, our two step nephews and myself went out. Got our holes drilled. The younger of the two nephews Jake was out ice fishing for the first time. He forgot the beer, porno and collected green firewood. So his rookie mistakes cost him a penalty of having to release 3 fish.

It wasn't long and Jake had his first fish on. He had a big rainbow on. Got him to the hole, but broke him off as his head came through the hole.

We counted that as his first release

Shortly after, we were standibg around the fire. Then I seen Jake's rod fall over. I ran over, flung my glove off and did a diving snag as the rod went down the hole. With a gymnastics roll and a saved rod, I didn't even spill my diet coke.

The rest of the crew came over and Jake played out his fish. Landed an ok rainbow. Tipped the digital scale at 2 pounds 7 ounces. He had his first fish while ice fishing.

We waited a little longer and Jake's rod bent in half again. Jake made quick work and pulled another out of his hole. I got a quick picture and it went right back in. Fish number two back into the drink.

On the 29th went solo out to "dewar" I left my auger in my brother's truck. So I stole my dads. He warned me that it wasn't drilling with shit. Sure enough, he wasn't lying. Had the whole lake to myself. Only seen one fish come to my bait. Would have liked to move to a better spot... but auger problems.

Thought today was going to be a waste. Got up early to head to "Dugan". Wanted to switch the blades on my dads auger. Headed to walmart as soon as the doors opened. No blades. So burned to crappy tire. Again no blades. Then worked called. Spent the morning trying to get a shipment on a truck from Leduc to a dealership in Edson over the phone. That took way to long and had to fix a problem for a pretty pissed customer.

Got that straightened out and headed to surplus herbies. Found some blades. But they only had eskimore blades... I had a swede bore auger. Looked like they were going to work.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xlp1/v/t1.0-9/fr/cp0/e15/q65/735015_10156389696240387_8051855436698483172_n.jpg ?efg=eyJpIjoidCJ9&oh=006d7d48d6792a29883c0cd59946c89f&oe=5713EA0F

The holes didn't quite line up. So took the auger to my brothers shop. Did some mods. Found the blades were sharp.

So back to herbies to grab a new guard. Ran into my buddy Roman. He was headed to pine valley to kill time at the ditch lake. So I figured I'd join him and get some fishing in.

Roman caught a little 8" brookie. Then I hooked into two little rainbows. Bigger one was 1lb7oz and the smaller was 11oz.

Never understood why they would remove a pectoral fin. Adipose is much easier to remove and has to be less painful. Great looking fish.

They're reporting that the lake will be stocked with 2000 fish annually. I think the fins just get beat up being in tight quarters.

May be that removing an adipose fin indicates there is a nose tag.

Caught me off guard when I seen the green and purple come through the hole. I think if I were to go back I'd only fish off the dock with all the holes out there.
