Being a Resident Hunter, I have used the services of a few Packer/Transporters over the years....... all independents ...... they have not been the G/O Transporters .....

These hunts can be purchased for a fraction of a cost of Guided hunts and make affordability to the Residents more attractive. Plus the DIY is pretty darn fulfilling after your dropped off by Horseback, Jetboat or Plane.

I have been VERY satisfied with my experiences and hunts. I'm not looking into licensing more Independent Transporters where they are already present but how about the many area's throughout the Province where there are none, or it's already licensed to a G/O. Realistically, what are the odds on a G/O Transporter putting you into a prime area For Rams, Bills or Bulls for 2 or 3 Thousand bucks when the G/O knows he can get $30 to 40 thousand from a guided client? Rather a double standard really and a conflict of interest so to speak. So if Independents were licensed in more area's through out the Province, we as residents get more access to the back country which is at present tough and kind of off limits to Residents. Many G/O's want our Resident access to the back country limited ...... why so, this is Crown land and why should they have a Monopoly so to speak on their area. After all, is competition in business not a good thing ?

What's your thoughts .......

The transporter policy does allow for the licensing of more transporters:

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/transporter.html

Guide outfitters are supposed to make transporter services available to residents. If that is not happening in a certain area, then there is room for licensing a transporter and the fact that the GO is not fulfilling the needs of residents who want to be transported should be considered in the new license application.

We have used a transporter 2 years in a row, have had 2 successful season's, however their provincial license only allows them to pack for 15 hunter's only, and they must be B.C. residents.
Their tenure is in a guide territory, so they must disclose to them all animals killed. Licensing and fee's cost them upwards of $5000.oo per year just to hold the territory or it will revert back to the guide. Their area is in prime Moose, Elk, and Sheep, in a gos season. Griz are on LEH and 5 were available last year.

One problem transporters have in establishing new areas is location and infrastructure. The further back "into the bush" the higher their costs, thus the higher the costs to their customers. The transporters in 7b are all located in areas that have reasonable access, thus they can and do provide great service at a reasonable cost. Too bad more outfitters don't follow the lead of Big Nine Outfitters. They cater to residents with good success.

I think that I speak for many, is there a list of these transporters? I personally would hire a transporter to get my family out as the experience is priceless.

A transporter tenure does not "revert" back to the guide, however the guide(s) does have first right of refusal on purchasing the transporter tenure. Big Nine did this with Robert York's transporter business.

Yes I too have heard good things of Tetsa ....... That said We have used STEAMBOAT 3 times and RIVERJET once ....... All nothing but good things to say.

I think ink once ya got set up say off some larger lakes, plane drops with horse pack combos could create better and better access for the residents for a portion of the price of guided hunts with more self satisfaction.

The only licensed/legal horse based transporters I know about are:
Double A Packers http://www.doubleapackers.com/
Tetsa River Outfitters http://www.campbellriver-fishing.com/tetsa.htm
And us, Steamboat Mountain Outfitters http://www.steamboatmountainoutfitters.ca/Home.html

In order to obtain a transporter license the applicant needs to show that there is a demand for that services that is not being met by the outfitter. If there is demand someone will fill it. Funny with all the road closures in the kootenays we haven't seen some action there.
