Why do you have hooks mixed in with your beads!!!!

That leech pattern would kill Cutties on the west side of the Island..i tied a similar pattern, less the bead between the body and head

14 is small... i used primairily 8's for both leeches and Muddlers. i do a 10 whoolyBugger that i weight as much as possible for early season Cowichan river fishing...
Dont get to 14 for streemers ... lots of 14-18 dries tho

i have a bunch of 18-21 stuff i bought for our Fernie trips... too tough for me to tie at my skill set now.. i can do some but they dont look as good...... anyway, in the last couple seasons i have been trying them on my home water with limited success. i did have a good evening on a BWO that was 18... normally i saved the flies from Fernie for our next trip,, Wife and i have gone there 6 years,, might go again this fall....

Anyway The Cowichan,,, thus far for me has been a 12-14 dry river.... #12 Green/olive Elkhair being my #1.

Funny story about fly tying.....

I fished with a guy named Ed he lived in Coombs... I only knew him for a couple years,, he was a friend of a friend. Anyway Ed Tied,,, he was good to....
I was down at a river we both fished and found a box of flies.... i could see it was stuffed full at first glance... I then looked closer... immeadiatle i knew they were Eds..
I called Phil and said "Hey, Did Ed loose a flybox?" .... "Ya it was on the XXX River" lol "Ya i gott'em come get'em"

When phill showed up i gave him the box,,, after i liberated a half dozen.. infront of Phil of course... I told him to tell Ed it was a "Finders fee!"
Ed and i had traded loads of flies i knew he wouldnt mind... i only took applicable patterns tho! lol

Steven,

That's a similar pattern we use for coho. Conditions have to be right, but when they are, hang onto your rod. Nice job by the way.

Awesome set-up and work! I need to come learn a thing or two from you!

Tig...it is far less expensive to go and buy $ 300 worth of flies than to get all the tools, fur, capes, feathers..however these comercial patterns are not usually quality..usually Mustad hooks etc.
I enjoy fooling a wary old rainbow on something I tied...its relaxing and enjoyable.
You dont need Wasatch tying tools Griffin works well at 90% less cost..but Wasatch does not hurt..number one important is being organized...knowing what you have and where it is...knowing what to use and how will come in time.
I also am paranoid about loose hooks amongst feathers with a lab bird dog in the house...
Cheers
Steven
Ps hope to get to Dawson creek yet to bring home an elk for material for caddis..lol

Good luck on the elk hunt!
I have been tying flies for about 7 years now and I know what you mean about how commercial patterns not being nearly as good. I also relish in the satisfaction of tricking a beauty fish on a fly I have tied. I also agree GREATLY about being organized, that is a MUST!
But my setup is not nearly as in depth or impressive as yours, so I had to wipe a bit of drool. But it will all come with time!
Thanks for sharing!

Steven what would you use to attract kokanee? The whole Beaver valley chain of lakes is said to have some in it. I have tried ice fishing for them but no luck in catching one.
No pictures of your vice...

Hmmm kokanee are merely landlocked salmon? I WOULD think? Pink ? Maybe with some creme white polarbear...some crystal flash..alittle length for some movement to make the cf move and sparkle?

Never heard about kokanee in those particular lakes...did play around if you care to try em?
