Hello all, Just wanted to share my hunting experience in lanai Hawaii. This was my second hunt there and this time I was successful. I highly recommend Cody Bradford as a guide. He is a great guy and his prices are reasonable. Cody is able to help you hunt Mouflon sheep and axis deer on the Island of lanai and Deer and Spanish goat on Maui. I saw sheep everyday and the terrain was both unique and beautiful. This hunt is not canned good boots and light weight gloves are a must. If your interested in hunting while in Maui give Cody Bradford a call at 1 801 367 8721

Very cool!!! I just got back from 2 weeks on Kauai and have been a number of times. Not sure if you can hunt the deer on Kauai if non-resident (quite frankly I haven't checked) but the wild pigs you definitely can. I think the deer hunting is centered more on the West/North/middle of the island as it's definitely FAR less civilized. My gal thinks I am in idiot for wanting to do the pig hunting with dogs and nothin' but a knife as it is offered :p.....she reminds me that it is NOT covered under our travel insurance.

Learned this a few trips ago just as a side note but the deer on Kauai are actually transplanted blacktail's from Oregon; assuming I heard the correct info.

MB you aren't turning into a pussy are you, dog and knife is the only way to fly :) How was the holiday, and yes blacktail from Oregon is correct.

I checked into deer hunting on Kauai last time we were there and yep you can! One of the guides works as a baggage handler at the airport! ;-) You can also hunt on Molokai which btw has the best white sand beach I've ever seen!

Haha.....yes need to check for "elevated" travel insurance ie. "losing ones balls to an angry pig". :p

Trip was great....Poipu the first week and good weather. Hanalei the second week and the weather was 'interesting'.....thank goodness for a gas range in the house we rented as we were without power two of the nights due to VERY high winds.

Wanted to get out and try fishing but had not heard good things recently close to Kauai and doing one of the 2am departures may have been questionable as the winds/seas were apparently pretty high out offshore.

Next time I get back to Hawaii, I am DEFINITELY going hunting! Probably upland birds on the big island. Seems to be lots of birds around on Kauai and Maui, but I'm not sure of the hunting options there.

Looked into a pig hunt on the Big Island a few years ago, $1500/day, it would be fun though blasting porkers with an AR and a handgun.. Lots of turkeys on the Big Island. HI. state hunting licenses are slow to get for non residents.................how long is your stay, 4 weeks, OK then you will get license in 5 weeks type of deal. Marlin fishing at $700 / day is a better deal.

Hey BCBRAD I had no problem getting a non resident licence, never have. Showed my BC hunter number and paid $95 and my licence is still good until end of the year. Took ten minutes.

Kauai must be the chicken capital of the world. There are chickens everywhere! And the roosters wake you up at daybreak...

Hahaha......ain't that the truth. All from a hurricane in 1992 if memory serves me correctly that let TONS of them escape from farms, although they were brought to the island MANY years ago as a food source. Have been there about 5 times now and I remember the first time driving out of the airport and my gal and I were looking around saying "WTF....who left the coop open?"

Some of them are brilliantly coloured!! Thanks to the chickens I have my lucky fishing hat......and a hat that says "yes" to every occasion. :-P Bought it about 5 years ago and it's been everywhere with me; this is a shot of Hanalei Bay about 10 days ago.

Couple questions about charter fishing on kauai? Headed there on may 3rd for my honeymoon and I the misses has graciously given me the OK for a day of fishing (just one of the many reasons for marrying her)

Can you recommend a charter?
Have you been able to keep any fish, we're staying in a vacation home in poi-pu and would like to cook some fresh fish?
Anything I should bring other than stuff to keep my from frying I'very got ginger-vitis?

Thanks next trip if we ever go to Hawaii will include some hunting.

That sounds allot better, I was led astray on that one, damn internet :). Still the price was high for one day in my economy. I will look at it again next time to Kona. So they recognize out BC hunter number as taking a course, which is a requirement, that's were the slow mo approach came from.

Hey Beaves.....May looks like an outstanding month if you look at the fishing calendar!

http://captaindonsfishing.com/kauai-fishing-calendar/

There are lots of charters and if I were you I'd spend some time Googling "Fishing in Kauai". Lots of charters to look at....quite frankly I've been out on a couple and wouldn't recommend either of them.

You could look in advance and narrow down who you may want to go with; check Trip Advisor reviews as well.

From Poipu you are a short drive to Port Allen OR Lihue which odds are you'll be going out of one of those 2 spots. A great thing to do is a bit of 'recon' when you get there and head to the docks around early/mid afternoon and see what boats are coming in with fish.

I can tell you one thing.....and if you're up to it I would look at one of the charters that leaves around 2-3am. They will get you out further offshore and MUCH better fishing for the most part as compared to leaving at 8am and just fishing the immediate waters around Kauai.

Thanks for the tips

What co.s do you not recommend?

2-3 is no big deal for me, it's almost like going out to Vedder in Chinook season, get there before the herds.

OP sorry about hijacking your thread

Beaves.....I really wish I could remember the names. All in all the boat was average albeit a larger boat.....crew was okay on both but it really felt as though they weren't all that concerned with getting on fish; just kind of going through the motions.

Both times we had 'hired guns' who were the running the boats and not the actual owner/operator of the business. Something you may want to clarify as we did when fishing off Maui 2 years ago.

BCBRAD I was charged $350 a day and a $3000 kill fee if I shot a sheep. Thought it was quite fair. Deer and goat are cheaper.
Upland birds and a great sporting clays operation are on Lanai. Cody can help.

The fishing, Have done it once out of Maui. Boat was called the Rascal. Very expensive. Caught 2 small tuna. I have been told Kona is the place to go for big game fishing.

That is not to bad for the experience, I just scanned the Kona area phone book and that is what I came up with. Cruising the areas away from the beach up in the hills there seems to be lots of turkeys and skinny goats.Summertime is the time to fish off Kona although we went in January, lots of charters out there, http://www.konaspirit.com/, went with this guy a few times, last outing 2 years ago, was ~$600 with tax for six hours plus $100 tip. 6 hours is lots as you start fishing directly out of the harbor and back ( no 2 hour run time like some spots in Mexico). You can negotiate for the fish , but generally he will fillet out anything under 50lbs anything over is the boats, got into some Marlin on occasion. Went with Bite Me charters , when he was a small concern, both fish hard but of the two Kona Spirit is better, the boat is yours , no other parties involved.

The kill fee seems high.. rather outrageous in fact. The best things (ecologically speaking) for these islands would be to wipe out all the goats, sheep, pigs, etc. And yet they make it difficult / expensive to do so. I guess the natural ecology is screwed anyway, so the locals may as well make some money.. but $3000 for a feral sheep? yikes!

Well you sure don't get much foreign hunting for under $4000USD now. Other than Europe, Lanai is the only place you can harvest a pure free range Mouflon sheep.

Hi traveler, I've been really interested in hunting in Hawaii self guided but I can't seem to get a straight answer in if
i can or not. Were you able to go there as a bc resedent and buy a non resident tag? Im sure a few hoops to go through if so but I would do whatever it takes if its possible! Nice sheep by the way! Congrats.

cheers

Nice, Hauler! Shout out from Big Balls in Renfrew. Butcher actually works with the guy you were playing chinook toss with in August.

And Butcher, you better take it easy, you're not as young as you use to be!
