These pictures sent along to me of a hungry lynx at the Oliver landfill on February 20th. Perhaps looking for a can of "Tender Vittles"?

That's sad to see. Looks like that fellow has a few sores on his face, may be indicative of his overall health. Very rare to see a lynx down that low in elevation this time of the year. He should be up chasing bunnies in the deep snow.

Looks like and old fellow there. Probably not as quick as he used to be...

Fat Landfill Rats are easier to catch then Bunnies

We had a BobCat hanging around our Local Landfill all last month.....not unusual to see them as thiers plenty of Birds and Vermin to dine on.

Like all Predators they are Opportunists.

My friend shaot a beautiful Coyote on his bear-bait pile last fall. He was surprised to see all the Sea-gull and raven feathers around the bait pile. His disabled friend was watching the bait-pile for Bear from a ground blind he had for his wheelchair and saw the coyote take-out a seagull that was into the bait. He had his .243 ready but didn't know if he could take the coyote. Over the next 3-days the coyote continued the same pattern and was using the bait pile as surely as the bear hunter when he got plugged.

It's sad to see Lynx doing the same thing. I've only ever seen 3 live Lynx in the bush in my entire life. You could sell tickets for people to come to the landfill to see that one I'm sure.

I've seen 5 Lynx since moving to Kelowna in 2001. Last month while driving on a logging road with the wife I mentionned how I felt lucky having seen 4 lynx. Less than 5 minutes later she say's "Here one!". Yep, right in a little clearing looking at us. We watched him for over 5 minutes and he was not too worried about us. He eventually scoottered away after I gave him my famous grouse in heat call.

I take it they arent open up there? He'd already be mounted if he was I'm sure. Might be doing him a favour.

Saw my one and only Lynx up Whipsaw Rd. (Princeton area) last year. He didn't hang around very long, long enough for a good look though.

This Lynx in the Landfill may also be a sign of the times though I must say he is a bit on the skinny side. It is unusual to see a Lynx in the valley bottom as it was unusual to see Bobcat on the trapline above 2-3 thousand feet and now we are getting both Bobcat and Lynx at elevations of 4000 ft and higher. This has been a tough winter on the Bobcat here in the valley bottom.
Cheers
