Looking at a new frame pack. I have the badlands ox but doubt that its very good for a sheep hunt and i find it uncomfortable on long hauls. Just looking around the kuiu packs caught my eye but would love to hear some personal favorites on brand and size for a 10-12 day sheep hunt.

Barney pack, never owned one but when I was hiking in Alaska met up with a guy on the Chilkoot trail that had one and it looked awesome, external though

There are a lot of used kuiu packs for sale, don't have any experience with them but that seems to be a bit of a warning sign to me. I just picked up a MR 6500, look forward to chasing some goats/ elk with it!

I've been happy with my Kifaru timberline. It's the internal frame version. Not too heavy and all the room you need for an extended backpack hunt. Hunted with a few folks using various versions of the Kuiu pack, and they are okay but seem a bit "delicate".

MR 7500, used a buddies on a 7 day hunt. Liked it quite a bit, just picked up myself a MR 6500, with the day pack lid so its close to the same cubes. Got the metcalf along with it and so far have liked it for the time ive had it on hiking. Lighter which i will use for most of my hunts but ten plus sheep hunts definitely the 6500. The other frame packs ive heard about quite a bit are the Barney frames with the pinnacle bags.

Been using wilderness wanderer for over 20 years now, this is my second one. NOTHING packs a heavy load like them. This 1 has probably had close to 75 sheep, moose and caribou in it. Tried a packers Barney once and felt sorry for him when we switched back. What I hate about soft frames…. back is always wet with sweat…..no posts to hang the rifle and binos or other packs lol…..dont freestand.

I've been using a Wilderness Wanderer since 1988. Its hauled more than a few tons of critters out of the hills. Has always done the job very well. Only thing might make it better, would be one of those nice Barney's bags on the WW frame.

Another vote for Kifaru....

Have owned Mystery Ranch as well and have nothing but good to say about them also.

So far after the comments im really liking the stone glaciers. What are you guys going for in regards to size. Best size for 12 day sheep hunt and minimum size you would recomend.

I have used that pack and it is very good. It is easy to keep things organized. It also compresses enough to hunt for the day with it. Only complaint is that it is noisy for day hunting. I just picked up a stone glacier and it is extremely light and comfortable. I got a solo bag so that I can use it as a day pack and a weekender. I can't wait to try it with a heavy load.

Look up outdoorsman backpacks. Got one last year works awesome. I was in Vegas 2 years ago at the sportsman show tried on 6 different packs and this was by far the most comfortable. Really neat system 10 clips and the main bag comes off. Great for ferrying out loads. Has it's own strap system for meat. I got the 4800 with the 2000 ci add on. I should have got the 6000 with the same add on. This pack has a 200 lb capacity.

Sold off my mystery ranch 6500 for a Stone Glacier. So far so good, fits a little different but feels comfortable.

..I got the 4800 with the 2000 ci add on...

Question for all...

I'm running a J107... now they have the spike duffle add on. Buddy has it, and I can't say I like it at all. You gotta have your pack fully extended whether it's in your meat carrier or zipped on. Only thing I like about it is it does add extra space. But I find I carry extra whore's shit that I don't need with that extra space.

Question is... anyone find add ons that are similar beneficial? I can see modular bags for sure... but anything like the spike duffle on the ebrelestock... thumbs down

Another Kifaru guy here (DT1) Iv never hauled any other top end pack, but haven't needed to try since buying a Kifaru. They have the long hunter (6300ci) and the highcamp bags (7000ci) on a good sale right now to. I use the duplex frame, can't say enough good about it. Either one of them sizes would be fit for a 10-12 day hunt.

I run a J107 as well. The super spike duffel is something I use all the time. If I am heading out on a backpack trip I attach it but don't use it at first. My gear goes in the main pack and the duffel gets compressed in with the pack after its loaded. When I set up camp its used to hold all the gear I don't take with me daily. If I am "coming out heavy" my meat goes in the main compartment and my lighter camp gear goes in the duffel. It all gets compressed in after loaded. When heading out truck camping all my clothes go my duffel. I use it a lot. For other useful pack add ons all I really add is some small compartments on the outside for cameras and such.

Although I enjoy my eberlestock I just ordered a new kuiu icon pro 5200. My backpack trips are usually short 2-5 day trips. This new 5200 looks like it may be a pack I can enjoy. As a side note, I use my pack as a daypack as well so I don't run anything too large. I would rather take a deer apart and put it in my pack than drag it 500 yards.

Currently using a Paradox evolution which is an ultralight external frame pack.So far i really like it. This is the first pack i have not had to cinch the waist belt too tight to prevent slippage. The externall frame has a very unigue feel to it really hugs the body and the frame articulates a lot with lighter weight then stiffens as the load increases unlike the other external frame packs which remain stiff like a board.Waterproof bags which are inter changeable.Worth looking at for sure.

I run the add-on empty until I have to pack extra stuff out. Then it gives that extra room when needed. This pack has 3 straps that compress everything so it is not an issue when not in use. It works great at spike camp to hold all extra gear not used on day hikes.

Im a MR6500 fan too, great pack. Super comfortable and bullet proof. However, I tried a stone glacier solo this yr for day hunts, and a couple weekend trips and its awesome. I placed my order for the new Sky Archer 6200 and sold the MR.

Well I have both a wilderness wanderer , and a j 104 hanging in the basement . I use the j104 as a day pack only . I would be hard pressed to use it on an extended pack trip . I have done a few trips with the WW . I have packed out a grizz with it , and helped with a goat that 's the two heaviest loads . I don't get out enough to up grade my packs . But if I was going to I would look at the Barney's with the largest bag they make . After seeing how the WW has broken or seams / zippers have come apart loaded . Miles from anywhere is not where anyone needs a pack to break . I also have never heard of a barney's breaking .
just my two cents take it for what it is worth .

For 14day sheep and ultralight the stone glacier is the lightest. Hard to judge toughness on one trip but no complaints with my terminus yet. If you don't mind the extra weight the Barney's is extremely tough from what I've been told...
