While Ive seen a few short threads so far this fall I don't think anyone had started a generic thread to post your predator kills and misses.

Made it out this morning with bow and foxpro. Had a pack on the go but came up empty.

Please include techniques(calls, calibers etc)
Post away!

allow me to add the first pics, out on the 20th of dec with the wife, I spotted the lil dawg checking fence posts for food, at 350 yards away I gave him the old kiss's to the back of the hand call and he comes running full tilt. he came to a stop suddenly and I range him at 116 yards, normally a gimme with a centerfire rifle but I grabbed the 22 cal. lets say that I'm glad I built a 600 yards range in the back yard last spring because 1 shot through the spine just above his heart, lungs and he was toast without so much as a wiggle.

What a beautiful animal - I haven't seen the colouration before.

BHB, you mentioned the old "kissing the back of the hand"... is this creating some sort of wounded hare sound?

nice cross-fox there, was worried until I saw you are in AB. Congrats they should be fair game in BC too.

it sounds more like high pitched rodent squeaks. a foxes ears are like radar dishes and sounding like a mouse ( their main food ) will bring them running. just make sure your gun is ready to shoot before you start calling so you minimize your movements. I almost blew it

Your wife let you throw that on the kitchen table did she? Does she have a sister?

bowhunterbruce
12-28-2014, 03:55 AM
Accually, she threw it on the table and yes she has a sister that's a detective in Victoria, already married though.
now my question for everyone is, how do ya get rid of fleas from these dawgs before ya bring them in for skinning, sure one can do the skinning outside but in -20 to -30 it gets a tad chilli real fast.

I've heard of guys throwing them in a garbage bag and spraying with Raid. Nice colours on the fox.

Been up at the cabin in 6-04, 2 close calls one with a single wolf the other with a pack, nothing hitting the snow yet. Last morning today keep the fingers crossed. On another note seeing lots of cows with calves.

X2, couple blasts of raid in a garbage bag and twist it shut should do the trick. Come back after a few hours and take out of the bag, you may want to let it air out for awhile to tame down the raid smell. Nice cross-fox, looks very well haired and healthy.

Made it out again this morning with the bow. Immediately, heard them going off on each other. Snuck in dropped the foxpro and hiked up a bit higher hoping that they would use a fence line to come in.
I could hear one just above me and could see two other dogs trotting in an orchard/vineyard over to a kill that I knew was there from yesterday.
I hit the one of the pup-in-distress calls and the two bolted over from 600-700 yards away.
Took a little video/audio with the iphone as I stood there feeling helpless with my bow in hand and not having permission on the private land.

http://youtu.be/Xa0woDHKdHc

One yote swung downwind and made a big loop around me. Probably just educating them a bit but it is fun.

They are REALLY hard on the deer in this area as they use the perimeter fence and vineyard rows to kill at will.
There were two kills inside the fence and one just outside the fence.

Didn't go knocking. There's a gate leading to the property that I did not feel comfortable crossing. Will try to get a phone number.

Tried whitetail fawn-in-distress yesterday(they kill mostly whitetails here). Had more action with the locator pack howl. They sounded aggressive but pretty sure they were just defending their kill.

Best of luck TB!

I'm looking to try a coyote hunt for the first time but i'm having difficulty finding suitable terrain on crown land to call them in. Could someone help point me in the right direction on crown areas coming from the LML? Are they typically in lower elevation open areas or can they be found higher up in cut blocks?

haven't done too much calling for them intentionally, they come in often to my can call when deer hunting...mostly spot them far out and stalk in, when they don't take off sprinting...first coyote this year, think i'll be shopping for a fur friendly calibre pretty soon

I have the gun, the decoy, the area and a Foxpro caller on the way......but I still need ammo...22-250 is very hard to find in this neck of the woods. Been to GP and back and nobody has any. Time to branch out and start calling stores....but the shipping is going to be more expensive than the ammo...

Looking forward to this post!!

Should have a pic of two dead coyotes from yesterday but two clean misses instead! 15 mins into the stand a pair popped out 75 yards down the fence from us, my partner scared 'em pretty good with his 308. Good ol Lightning Jack did it again, with some pup distress mixed in

Pretty sure i had 2 wolves come in for the first time , fresh wolf sign so i set up and did 3 mins coyote pup distress , paused and heard an animal across the swamp in the thick stuff coming in then stopped another 1 coming around and in behind . Played it again quieter . Must have been scented or seen as i could hear them walking away . So close yet so far away from these crafty wolves .

Oh it will be the plan as I reload for everything else, just to even find brass is near impossible. I have dies and bullets on order, waiting for the brass.

Shooting a couple boxes off gives me the advantage of fire formed brass......

Went out for two days in adept river bottom. We had wolf tracks all through the snow and one set coyote tracks moving at a pretty fast clip. Both sets were a few days old but there were fresh bobcat tracks both days. Brought the 243 but spent the day shooting ducks. Lots and lots of snow on the ground in the area and more to follow. Waiting for a bluebird day with a steep drop in temp before heading back up. Also, anybody here shoot a .204 ruger?

Good job Ambush!

Coyotes killed a whitetail fawn last week up against my fence and talked to the local CO who was in my neighbourhood this morning uthenizing a young mule buck with its guts dragging on the ground from the same Coyotes...... If anybody is looking to kill some dogs there are plenty on Kelowna's south slope!

Was out yesterday morning, set up for lynx but heard some wolves howling a mile or so to the east. After 20 mins of rabbit distress and no kitty I switched gears to wolf howls and domestic cow distress. Had one wolf howl and it was closer (within a km) but no luck bringing it in. Turned into a blizzard

was out in the rain sleet today driving to different cut blocks calling here and there. Had a lone wolf cut across one block in the corner but wouldn't come into the calls. He knew better hahah. Try again tomorrow i suppose.

Sounds liek I need to find someone to do a roadtrip with me. Have been out a few times with no luck. I won't blame the daughter too much (moving and squirming like crazy). Have had some ki-yiis in answer to a locator call but they never came into a distress call when I repositioned closer. Not going to give uo tho.

Timber hunter and I went out , practiced safe skinning , we walked into 3 , busted , and then called in 7 , 5 came in at once and 1 came to within 50 yrds but didnt pull the trigger expecting the rest of the pack to come but they hit the downwind timber . I really need to practice 300 yrds plus shooting , most coyotes seen in 1 day , no fur but good learning .

My wife and I went out for the first time together at the end of January and we called in two dogs from over a kilometre each using a Foxpro and the cottontail distress call. I used the 7mm rem mag with 165 grain bullets. One at 260 yards and the other at just over 350 yards.

I don't have any coyote pics from this year, I don't really take them anymore unless I get 3 or more at a time. Had a very successful coyote season so far tho.

Got a wolf the other day. I already put it in a thread that hasn't seen much action, so hopefully it's ok to put it here too. I only get one or 2 a year, as they are very hard to hunt, and to me, luck trumps skill, but preparedness is key.
