i know pike get pretty lethargic in the winter.
but they do love to eat.
just like during open water season, practically anything will catch a pike.
less so under ice though as they dont have to be so reactionary.
use a flashy color or glow, my best spoon on my last trip to the yukon was a half and half green and glow spoon.
it

For pike I wouldnt use small minnows, I'd use at least 6-7" live bait, and fluorocarbon leader, don't like wire in fresh water too bulky, lose sensitivity and such, but that's just me, a million different combos to catch a pike

Only ice fished them in Alberta

Used the biggest smelt I could find

If lures jigging a big spoons works

Real key in my opinion is location 7-12 feet of water near structure is my go to

Almost forgot the most important don't sit in the same place if fish are not biting drill another hole. Fish are lethargic and moving 10 feet can make a big difference.

I won't sit on a hole for over an hour with no action. You can always try the spot again if you have not found the fish

Have used 18 inch fish from the frozen food section in super store

6-7 inch will catch 18 inch pike they are pigs

but this was Alberta doubt it would be legal in BC

Ya, 6-7 being the minimum, in ontario we use 18 19" baits, ffor recreational fishing no one wants to wait 2 days for a giannt pike, you can catch 30" fish all day on mid size baits

Fresh chicken skin cut into 6-8 inch strips like a worm.Hook one end and let the rest trail.Dances like crazy when you twitch the rod and it`s white so it shows well.Kills `em,trout,jackfish,bass....you name it.

first and last ice pike fishing is hot bite, but even though they are aggressive it can be slow fishing during the middle of winter...pike are notorious for coming in and watching your bait before they hit....I like to start with an aggressive presentation and then switch to neutral if no biters (is nice when regs let you ice fish 2 holes)...if nothing after an hour move spots...like someobody else mentioned, 10' can be a big difference

jigging rapalas, williams spoons, jigs all work well...Didn't think you could use finned fish for bait in 7b?

I've done the chicken skin and also bacon strips, uncle josh pork baits as well, worms, a lot of thingswork, pike ain't picky....I'm a big fan of berkley gulp products, the little 2" minnow grubs on a light jig head, can jig it aggressively or just let it sit there, works great

guessing your kid will be very happy catching fish, rather than putting in the time for the monsters, so I'd stay with smaller baits, small baits catch big fish too....these are local chetwynd pike here, same bait but different colour caught both

most areas of bc you can't use shiners or whole fish, so ensure you read the regs. steel leaders is a good idea, and as described by brvalley, jigging rapalas or jigs with soft baits such as grubs can be very effective.

hold on, they hit like a freight train
