Yeah me too. Was one of my favorite pastimes when I lived over there. Moose, elk & whitetails were all we had where I lived. No mulie's anywhere near there.

Sure wish I had kept my smallest one. Was a forkhorn whitetail about 3 inches long. In the days before digital camera's and can't remember if computer's were popular yet.

Wayne, I admire your persistence for shed hunting, you are likely tagged out hence your not bow hunting?
If your looking to get outdoors, what about a walk or drive down to your MLA's office to have a discussion about selling off our provinces wildlife?

That first you tub link I found that shed this year March the 7 earliest I have ever found an elk shed in my 4 years shed hunting in the EK
I looked for that other side never did find it I put in around 8 hr looking for the other side over a two week span ever time I was
in this area I would put in an hour looking for it.

My thoughts is ether the bull carried this shed a long ways away then dropped it some where could be anywhere in a 360 degree circle
a few kilometers away or another shed hunter found the other side ..

I thought it would be unwise to start shed hunting before Christmas Day as Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen are always carrying antlers.

if guys weren't so ancy to get out and hit the hills I would not start shed hunting until march. just too many deer packing antlers, plus its hard to find sheds when there still attatched. I find if you leave an area until all the deer have shed you will have better success as those deer will congregate into a small little area and shed together. when you start pushing the deer around it just makes that much more area to cover to pick up those sheds. one nice 5 pt shed we found was found mid march and it had just dropped. we had hit the ridge quite a few times the previous weeks is the only reason we know it had just dropped. also had fresh blood on the pedacle.

I found out that the areas I hunt for sheds is so competitive if you leave the shed hunting alone till March or latter there will be few sheds to find meany mule deer sheds and WT
there are shed hunters hitting the hills in lots of areas where I live in late Jan elk start dropping there antlers where I shed hunt in late Feb but the main drop is around the middle of April..

I do agree with you regarding..
If guys weren't so ancy to get out and hit the hills I would not start shed hunting until march,,,if I waited till March like you said there would be very little deer sheds to find for me anyway
the horsemen and women are real competitive in the areas I search for sheds..

Just found 2 moose sheds on Friday when we were out looking for cats to chase. Fresh this year. One is a dandy. How far do they usually go before they drop the other side. Never really looked for sheds before, but I would really like the other side of this guy.

Nice find on the moose. I have covered hundreds of KM through the bush in the last few years and have yet to find a moose shed.

I am looking forward to this springs shed hiking as well. I did pretty good last year with three sets and lots of singles found. Here are a few pics.

Sometimes a bull moose will drop them right by the other one I have not been this lucky when it comes to finding two moose sheds close by the bull that dropped the antler you found the other could be a mile away from the one you found the way I look for the other side is I start from where I found the first shed I go about 100 yards straight line both ways then step over 50 yard and do the same thing I continue doing the 50 yard coverage till I am out about 1/4 of a kilometer both sides from where I found the first shed..

A person can do this also when I find a fresh shed I do a circles criss cross patterns out about 100 yards out from where I found the first shed if no find I will continue doing the same criss cross pattern out further some times I will spend 2 hours looking for the other side till I had enough.

One time last year I was looking for the other side of a fresh 6 point elk shed the 7th of march I spent around 8hr looking for that other side never did find it ,,my thoughts are is that another shed hunter picked it up ..

The only thing you can do is go back and pound the area from where you found the first one it just might be 100 yard away good luck hope you find the other side :-D..

This is section one of two of my man cave and these are the sheds I found in the four years living here in Cranbrook I will be selling 95% of these sheds to an antler buyer

In case you decide to sell them in the future or even make something out of them, they should be kept out of the weather and out of direct sunlight. If selling them, they are worth a lot less if weathered and white. Natural brown pays a much better grade.

Cant wait, do you guys find the best time to go is right after they've dropped in Jan/Feb, or in the spring once the snow melts???

I like to head out in early Feb right on through to the first week of June a person gets the feel where the elk are and get lucky finding deer sheds when looking over areas might also find a few older sheds ,,, all and all if your not out there you won''t find nothing ..

Wayne, you need to take all those sheds behind the fireplace and build yourself one of those newfangled antler christmas trees for 2015.
