View Full Version : How much wind is too much?

I'm thinking of going to a field where I've had pretty good luck in lots of wind and rain before, but tomorrow morning it is forecast to blow 30 to 40 knots.

Do you hunt ducks in weather like that or is that too much? It might just blow my bamboo and burlap blind right on top of me.

I sure won't have trouble getting my Wind-Duck spinning.

We hunted today and it was blowing 70 SE with gusts to 90 and a torrential downpour. We killed a couple.....

I took the day off work and headed out early this morning. It was near impossible to stay on position and get decoys out. Crazy rain/wind gusts but lots of ducks in the air. For a short while I wondered if I should have went to work. I'm just stubborn and stuck it out but ended up with 6 mallards and two pintails.

The ducks will still fly, burlap doesn't block much wind tho so you might not be too comfortable. But the ducks will still fly, you'll have to adjust for the way they fly.

I found that when it is windy it makes my decoys more realistic because of motion movement and also, the area I hunt there tend to be more ducks flying inland fields.

The disadvantage about windy days are that I had to figured out how far I have to lead them. The last time I on very day was almost month ago, I knew that Federal 3" no#2@1550fps shots were little bit light for this 70-80km wind so I used my Kent's 3" no#1 @1560fps which buck the wind little better. It took me about 9 shots (all missed) to figured out that I need to lead them about 6-9 feet instead of my normal 2-3' to get my limit of mallards.

Another thing during that windy outing was those dead mallards which I shot blew back almost 150feet instead of dropping when I shot them at 25-35 yds.

My best days have been with winds 60-100 km/h . I set up with the wind at my back and a big landing zone right in front. Its nice because when the ducks commit they commit hard.

Pass shooting is also better in the wind. They fly lower. If you want a challenge shoot them flying with the wind. Otherwise shoot them into the wind and remember not to lead them!

Im not sure pass shooting ducks going with the wind when its howling is the best advice to give someone unless you don't plan on retrieving a lot of your birds?

We hunted this morning as well and killed a couple again.

This morning was top drawer, we took 4 limits of birds in just under 2.5 hours. The wind had the birds in aconfused state and the 15 plus foot tide was a big help as well. All birds shot had their legs down and wings cupped, dropping fast into the blocks, with the wind in their faces.

Depends where you hunt and whether you have a retriever! I tend to hunt B bay or farmers fields and have Jman to pick my ducks up so not usually a problem!

Never lost a duck in the Bay, I guess the 2km of knee high water on high tide helps.

I did. The eagle got it before I could wade out there.

Yea that is true, someone else wounded a hen mallard out there. It kept diving under from a circling hawk that was swooping. I finished it off and the hawk snatched it. Granted he did see it first.

To the OP, if you think the wind is to high just let'em land and water swat them ;)

Typhoon Freda was in 62' and hit just before midnight of Oct.12th but was all over by daylight of the 13th. I remember it well, my Dad and I hunted the pig farm for Pheasants that morning. Trunk Rd was a nightmare, trees down everywhere. K
