Well i've read enough stories on here that i guess its time i give one back!

this year has been lots of fun and it all started in spring with a black bear hunt that resulted in a really decent boar. i was in an area in reg 5 where we were seeing easily 10 bears a day. it was a really great learning experience for my ability to judge black bears. on day 4 after passing over many other bears, the one i decided to shoot walked along my path. he isn't overly huge, a 6 footer, but his coat is perfect and he had a big old pumpkin head! couldn't be happier

after spring hunt, its tough to go wrong with some summer fishing. I'm lucky enough to have a father who's mental for fishing and takes me along with him

but summer has to end and to be honest i didn't really care, i was ready to hunt.

my first trip was a region 8 opener for a week. i caught a beautiful white tail on my trail camera, 5x5, and decided that i was going to get him. i sat in a tree stand for 5 days and he never showed up. i was disappointed, but ill feel better if i catch him on cam next year and know i still have a chance. i passed on some small bucks because after all, it was still early september

late september rolls around and meant that i was going to region 7 to help my friend with his moose draw. talk about a tough hunt. between the warmth, seeing almost no animals, and getting harassed by FN, it was a tough go. i wouldn't put in for that general area again because of the low moose sightings, but i wouldn't let myself be deterred by the FN, because thats what they want and then they win. that being said, overall it was a great trip. how can someone complain about camping and fishing and hunting in the bc woods? very very thankful for this opportunity.

october rolls around and i decided it was time to take a freezer buck, and wow what an eater this guy was. his tenderloins may h ave actually melted in my mouth

and then november rolls around. I've never been a late season hunter, mainly because i like to fish when i hunt and all the lakes seem to be frozen by this time, but i decided id buy into all the hype and give it a try. spent 5 days hunting hard, every minute of the day, eating lunch on the go, not returning to camp until dark. after a couple days and not seeing a single animal, moral was a little low, but we slowly started seeing the odd buck. on the 4th day, we were sitting in a cut and it happened, this guy walked out in front of us. what a dandy, i couldn't believe it. one shot with the 270 short mag and he was down for the count. it all happened so fast that its a bit of a blur looking back. sure is an amazing feeling when your walking up to your kill and its better than your wildest dreams!
i took him to the taxi and he green scored him at 177 1/4, so along as he docent shrink too much in the next couple months, he will make the bc record book!

and with that, I'm pretty happy to hang up my boots and rifle until next season. its been a great year, tons of memories with friends in the woods, and I'm blessed to have as many good memories as i do!
thanks to everyone else who posts stories and photos, i know its kind of a pain in the ass, but its really great to share and pass on to other good guys here

Last but not least, i was supposed to accompany a friend to van island for his rosie elk draw. unfortunately i couldn't make opening day and was planning on coming out a week later into the hunt. i got updates every night from him and it sounded like a tough go. his region was thick, not many cuts, and they got hit with rain all day every day. he would tell me about miles and miles on foot trying to track down the herd with no success. never the less, they slugged away, and after 6 days of intense hunting and physical taxation, they found the herd.
as you can see, what an amazing animal. 7x7 that the taxidermist rough scored as a 320-330 class bull, it will definitely make boone and crocket.
these guys earned this bull the hard way, and i can't think of a better ending for a couple hunters who slugged it out.
although i am disappointed i couldn't be there for this hunt, i am over the moon thrilled for my friend. when you hear the elation in someones voice who has just bagged a real stomper, its almost as good as shooting it yourself.

Great year and that's one helluva mule deer! Happiness comes in the form of a large taxidermy or butcher bill, or both!

Hey HF, thanks for taking the time to put up your stories and pics. Really nice looking game!

For those of us just starting out (first deer trip for me starts on Thursday) there's always something learned from these stories - successful or not.

You mentioned you were in the middle of the cut - i would have thought that would have been to exposed (apparently not!).

Cheers,
BR

Congratulations - that's a season of a life time for many of us. Way to be persistent, even when there was little to no activity.
