Not a lot of hunting this year for me, got a meat buck in Oct but it's always the Nov deer camp that's the high light.
Could only get away for 4 days, Hunted hard up and down fir ridges and didn't see a single deer, sign was there but not huge amounts, the area up high where I hunt is Mule deer terrain. With the cold weather and dry forest it was loud, the only thing I could do was move along slow and intermittent hoping to sound like a couple deer with long pauses using the can call and some times a grunt.
Day 4 Nov 18th was the same routine, I had a buddy with a broken ankle come in to camp from Kamloops the night before to hang out. I took the opportunity to have him drop me off at the end of a old road at the bottom of a long steep ridge, he was to pick me up a few hours later at the top. The ground between the road is classic semi open fir terrain. About half way up after thrashing though a narrow deciduous ravine into a nice open grove I paused to let out a couple can calls and a grunt. after a few minutes I thought a I heard a soft grunt, looking up through the brush I saw a deer moving quickly across the hill, saw antler and was hoping to get a clear view to count points. He was coming down quickly when I got a clear view of his ass then realized it was a whitetail. Quickly got a good hold off a tree when he stopped in a swale , all I could see was the top of his back, he was close to my sent plume so at that point I was shitting. with the gun still up I grabbed the can and gave a call, out he came and walked across the hill to my surprise clear of the under brush, the gun goes off and he folds, the shoot was up hill double lung clipping the under side of the spine. I never really got a good look at the rack during this except for when he went down, No ground shrink walking up to him.

Dandy 5 pointer. Great story & pic's. I can certainly see by the ground cover why it was noisy walking.

What a great buck, congrats! I've been "arguing" with a buddy that there are WTs in 3-30 now - he's been hunting for 30 years and has never seen one, so of course I beeing a "noob" I don't know what I'm talking about.

Would it be too much to ask what area of Region 3 you got this beauty?

Cheers,
BR

Great buck and picture. That ground cover does look challenging for a quiet stalk. Well done.
