Anyone hunt around here or anywhere else up north during August?how bad can the bugs be and are there any considerations other than keeping the meat cool i should be thinking about?

First, be prepared for extremely long days. Not sure how hard you hunt however if you are like us, its shooting light from 4:45 am to 9:15 pm or thereabouts. Doesn't leave much time for camp, meals and shooting the breeze. Hunt all morning, try to get an afternoon nap in and then back out for the evening.

Be prepared for poor visibility. Trees, shrubs and brush are thick with foliage, you can't see far into the bush at all. Really easy to miss game right under your nose.

No grouse season.

Camp in the trees where you can get some shade, the days can be extremely warm and the nights don't usually cool off all that much till mid Sept.

The bugs are horrendous. Especially if you are working the swamps where it is a little cooler and damp. That's where the moose will be. Hard to beat the bugs really, just have to grit your teeth and endure. I've been eaten alive many times.

Bears are active and you need to watch closely for them.

All in all it's a great hunt however it will take just as much out of you as a hunt in October or November.
