So a couple days ago im driving with my girlfriend and she tells me she has 3 days off. Instantly I say damn I wish we could go hunting. Side note, my truck has been in the shop for 2 weeks dealing with ICBC bull sh*t. So she looks at me with a little grin and says why dont we take my car? I think for a few seconds about our options and realize all my hunting gear is in my storage locker which is closed on stat holidays.. ok so I have my pack, rifle, bullets, and optics. Screw it il buy another jerry can and wel go for the day. She says why dont we order some pizzas and wel sleep in the car and go for 2 days? Thats my girl!
So 3am comes and were off. Were a couple hours from the road and it starts to get lighter. Im thinking this isnt right then it hits me. Time change! Ok so were gonna be a little late no biggy. By the time we hit the road its about 8 and its sunny as all hell and a crisp -12. Where I usually hunt ranges from 3500ft - 5000ft and all the high mountains were covered in snow so I didnt think we were going to get very far. Anyways not an hour in and theres a deer on the road. A little spiker, right on. We keep on keepin on and not much further I look down and see a group of does feeding in the flat lands. I jump out and start glassing and doesnt take long for me to spot the buck bedded down right on the edge of a grassy cliff. Hes a 4 point! I grabb my spotting scope to get a better look and let my girlfriend check him out. Yup hes a shooter lets go. Shes shaking as we drive down the road to get a little closer. So we park and get out for the stalk and as were walking down a draw I trip and fall and all the does blow out and head for the hills. The buck stands up.. hes a good distance still but Its now or never and im confident with the shot. I line him up and boom! Nicols spotting and she says you missed, hes down in the draw now! So I get up and run down to where he was and look down the draw to find nothing. All thats down there is the river so hes gotta be somewhere else. Run back up to the ridge and look over to the next draw and see 4 deer jogging up the other side. Instantly I drop to my stomach and lean my rifle over the peak of the ridge. Doe.. doe.. buck! He stops and looks back to my girlfriend but hes facing straight away from me. Starts running up the hill and reaches the top and now hes walking broadside so I do a desperate doe bleat and let her bark. He hits the dirt and I just scream BUCK DOWN!!! It was such a relief after thinking it was another lost opportunity. Anyways we went back and got my frame pack and and our dog and went off for the recovery. It was pretty sweet to have my girlfriend there for her first experience of a deer kill and my 10 month old pup. He loved the deboning part as he got a few treats to chew on.
And on the way out we were lucky enough to see a group of big horns all rutted out. Ewes fighting and kicking. 5 rams including one gorgeous dark horned full curl. They had a few head buts and lip curls. One of the 3/4 curls tried to sniff out a ewes ass and the big guy came down and smashed him right in the shoulder lol was quite the show. Oh ya and saw a huuuge 4 point on the way out... lol heart breaker buck. Massive dark grey forks with white tips and a huge basket frame. All in all just an awesome day
