Friday morning I headed up to my best whitey spot to see if they were coming to rattling yet, but only managed to bring in a spike muley. I decided that Muleys might be the better option so I hiked up to a favourite ridge and stillhunted into the wind. I was busted by a monster whitey, which was a good reminder to slow down even more.
Ten minutes later I caught a glimpse of white movement in my peripheral vision to the left, so the binos came up just in time to catch a muley rump disappear behind some fir saplings. It was too thick to head in after it without spooking it, so I worked my way uphill about fifteen yards and found a fresh bed. I had some more sight lines so I decided to wait and see if the deer would pop out and give me a look. After several minutes of nothing I noticed a fir sapling shaking 35 yards below me, then a couple minutes later I saw tines, and counted 4. Still no shot though. I had to wait another 5 tense minutes for a shot to present itself.
I've shot them in their beds before but this was the first time I shot one from it's bed. It was a tough pack back to the top of the ridge but a piece of cake going back down the other side to the truck.

I think you're right about it being a rose hip between his antlers. If I make it back up there before there is too much snow I'll check it out. He didn't have any does nearby and was busy making rubs when I found him. He was quite stinky, so I'm surprised I didn't smell him before I saw him. I trimmed 15 lbs of fat off him, so he was easily the fattest deer I've taken.

I thought a "tree shaker" was a common name for a big deer. What do I know. . . Well, he was actually shaking a tree. Great story, great buck. Congrats to the Tree Shaker Taker!
