So, after the whole fiasco of the flat tire and all the running around that ensued I finally was off and running a whole day behind. I arrived late the first night and went straight to the locals house that was going to help me as I was hunting solo and talked over some coffee about where I'd go the next day as he had prior engagements that day.

I went up the road to my camping spot and set up camp which was a quick job as I camp out of my canopy. I dreamt of big bucks and thought of the next morning which couldn't come fast enough as is always the case. The alarm finally went off and after making a quick pot of coffee I was off and running. I hit the road and knew where to go and was sitting on a block at first light. After a short hike up I was sitting in a little timber patch glassing away and all of a sudden I'm surrounded by clouds and had maybe 25 yards of visibility. So I packed up and hit the truck to try and get above the clouds, which didn't work so I went back to camp and made a good lunch and made a new plan as it wasn't breaking up. I hit a new to me road and just drove around just trying to feel it out. I found a nice cut and sat at the top with wind in my face and glassed spotting a doe in the grass. I watched till dark and just as I was planning to leave out walks a couple more does. They caught my scent at maybe 15 yards and started huffing and puffing, turned tail and bolted back to the trees. There was at least 4-5 deer standing in the trees but couldn't see them but heard them run off. All in all it was a good first day.

The first doe through the bino's.

The second day came and my local friend was able to make it out so I picked him up and we cruised some roads that he knew and just glassed from the truck as he is an older gent seeing a total of 10 does in the first 2 hours of hunting. After a quick coffee break we decided he would drop me off at an old deactivated road on top and I'd walk down back to the main road were he'd meet me. Well 2 hours later I made it back to him with no sign of anything until I was standing by the truck and 15 yards away a doe stood up. Thought that was pretty funny and we both had a good laugh. Anyways we went back to buddies place and drank more coffee and had a quick nap. The afternoon called for rain so we thought we better get out there. We went back up to the first spot I hunted and were going in when buddy says he'll take me up a different spot first just to see then he'd drop me off at the top where I could walk through the timber to the good cut where he would sit on the bottom just in case something came out. Well we didn't get that far as just as we were turning up there was my buck.

It was 4pm and the rain was coming. I had to leave the next day and when I looked up to see antler I knew it was now or never. I hopped out of the truck, loaded the good ole Browning X-Bolt in 270win lined up on the buck squeezed the trigger. I aimed for the head as he wasn't a "trophy buck" a small 2-point and he dropped. After a handshake and a cheer I went up to my trophy and got to work. Quick and easy he was loaded up and we were headed back at just after 5 with only one sliced on my knuckle. We got back and strung him up and ate a good hearty meal with a shot or two of good whiskey.

My trophy! Not the biggest rack but a trophy for me all the same.

I just want to thank my buddy for helping me out so much. I came up as a stranger really and left with a new friend and I'm sure a new hunting partner for years to come. Without your help and local knowledge I know I'd have gone home empty handed. So thank you again even though I know you wont read this.
