Sunny Sunday, and a Kootenay Mule deer

Came upon this buck while enjoying the incredible sunny day we had on Sunday. Was hiking up a ridge, when I spotted a doe bedded down on a knoll ahead of me. Stopped to enjoy watching her for a while, and eventually got my camera out to take a picture. Couldn't quite see her through the brush, so gave a little toot on the grunt tube to see if she would stand up. No sooner do I do this, than a buck stands up and walks out from behind a little clump of trees. I attempt calm, while I put down the camera, pick up the rifle and get a shot off into the centre of his ribcage. The buck then proceeds to stroll out across the slope, then turned uphill into another patch of trees. I've been told by a lot of old-timers that a wounded deer will only run downhill, so at this point I'm wondering about my marksmanship. Giving the buck a few moments I slowly track it up the hill, and find him slumped against a tree. Happy times.

I see the second brow and part of the main beam in the second pic, haystack have a decent spread for the other side to be wrapped around the tree!!

He does indeed have another antler, though the photos really don't show it. The tines from the other side are actually sunk into the base of the tree he fell against. Had to really pull to get the head free.

Beauty, looks like he was nice and high up in the bear grass. Looked of one like that for 8 years in the koots, never did find him.
