Well after my hunting partner started off the season with a full bag limit of mallards(I wasn't there was away for thanksgiving with the wife, damn commitments :). Things have really dried up, being that a lot of the Northern birds are still that, Northern. So to make some change we decided to head to public land and check out Boundary Bay. We ended up with a half dozen birds (no thanks to the sky-busters) to the pair of us, as well as some new tactics for water fowling..
Went back there on Saturday the 1st and had another decent morning and bagged three more, including a shoveler and a pair of widgeon. Sunday we headed back to the field with a feeling that things might be starting to look up with the heavy air traffic in the last few days. The morning was little slow, a lot of high fliers and birds far far off in the distance. We set out a decent spread(we're still learning) and had birds looking but not committing.
So I go out and adjust the spread, S*** there's two coming in as I stand there, looking at them missing one important tool, my gun. I guess I got that one set up right. With corrections made birds start to come in and commit, including geese which neither of us have had the opportunity to bring in to the deeks. After all the fumbling and dicking around to load the BBB we must have spooked them as they were coming hard and flared out at 75yds.
At the end of the day it was a great learning experience we ended up with another half dozen birds, learnt more boundaries for what we can and cannot do which includes killing phantom birds, lol. And to round it all off I got my first double and dropped two widgeons in one.
