Had a great day saturday. Managed to take my first mule deer and first whitetail.
Hunting up high and saw the mulie looking at me a ways up a nasty cut block. Totally random where I put the binos and was lucky to see him at the angle and very blended into the slash. I thought doe at first but we kept watching about 10 minutes until my buddy says he thought he saw bone. He pulls out the spotter while I get out of the truck and load a couple rounds into my new weatherby vanguard in 300 winmag. (I would have probably been shooting deer with my 300 savage but I was letting my gunless buddy use it.) He confirms that there is bone and I take a look through the scope still wanting to be sure. I see a tine and then just have to wait for him to turn for me. He finally goes back to eating and turns almost broadside but quartering uphill a little, I pull the trigger and he drops on the spot.

I'm pretty excited but decide to wait a few minutes then decide to go get him and get back down low for last light for whitetail. Takes me a good half hour to get to him and drag him down. I was still sucking wind after in the pic. Was pretty steep nasty terrain and about 180 yards or so. I was glad I was dragging him downhill or I'd still be there.

He turned out to be a nice 3x3. We threw him in the truck and decided we would head back to a spot we had for whitetail and I would get to work on him while my buddy set up his whitetail ambush. I got part way through skinning him when I notice this little guy hanging out about 30 yard away. Grab the gun and now whitetail down. He took a head shot to finish off. I think I was tired and hands were a pretty bloody. Not the best shot initially which pissed me off as I'd made a pretty good uphill shot on the mulie and managed to hit his heart.

Anyway, a great weekend and met some great people. One more deer tag left now so maybe another whitetail trip. Maybe try to wait for one with more bone than just pencils sticking out his head.

Awesome job,,,,really good you have pics of the mulie and whitetail side by side,,,,now some people can compare the differences between the two for out in the field identification purposes

Once I saw each species it was pretty clear how to tell them apart. Would be hard to mix them up for me now. When I first headed up there I was a little worried that the differences wouldn't be that obvious.
