2014 season to date.. 1st grizzly!!!

well been a different season for me this year.. took possession of me and the GF's new home on sept 28th.....right in th emiddle of hunting season...

Septemeber was crazy... i had a goat draw for the Dore River area and i squeezed in 2 nights , 3 days with GF looking for a goat before jetting home, packing and leaving for my annuel trip up to dease lk area, which i had to shorten in order to get back to move into our new place starting on sept 28th. To add to the kaos i was hired by an outfitter and was scheduled to guide oct 5-9th....

Goat hunt was interesting, very steep, rugged, small hard area to hunt... poured rain , fog, glassed lots, climbed threw a ton of horrible, thick alders and saw no goats :sad: , thi sis hunting though lol, it was my GF's first hunt..let alone goat hunt, she had a blast, actually pushed me at times and it was a great experince for both of us.

so back we came, beat up by alders, rocks and more... quick pack and off to Dease lk area with moose tags, and my grizzly LEH :), this my 3rd LEH grizz for th earea, didnt see any first fall, next spring i passe don 2 later realizing one was a shooter..... so i was hoping this was it. We also tagge dout on moose quickly last year and were hoping to do the same. Got to cabin at 4am... unpacked bedding and crashed till noon.. finished setting up camp, and headed out for afternoon hunt/scout to see what was happening out there. it was a gorgoues afternoon, sunny and warm, light wind.. perfect for looking around, little did we know it was the one and only nice day we would have for the next 9 days...... spooked one cow on sid eof a mountain around 3pm, saw lots of grouse and a TON of grizz sign and scat, way more then past years... it was everywhere...

we carried on quadding , crossed up over a pass and dropped down into a basin and where working our way down when i spotted BIG shoulders with a hump, head down, rooting around making his way up a ravine towards us at approx 500 yards away.. wind in our face :)

we left quads and booked it back the way we had come to get near top of ravine where he should come out.
so we get in place, he has video camera but is super nervous.. i was strangely calm.. and we wait....
and wait..... and wait... then i see movement and he starts coming into view approx 150 yards away coming along perfectly... then he decided to make things interesting

suddenly he decides to turn left and head towards where we parked our quads and out of our sight ......we wait another 10-15 minutes hoping he re appears.. no luck, so we very slowly, alertly, rifles ready creep back to the quads.. fully expecting to have a grizz coming flying over the embankment 100 feet in front of us at any second...

thankfully that didnt happen and we made it to the quads.. no grizz??? WTF.. now im getting a little nervous, i know he swithin 200-300 yards .. but where.

behind us is a hill which would give me better visability of the area, so we climb up and have a look....

he's nowhere where he SHOULD be..... but as i look back to where we were standing waiting for him to originally come out...... there he is, sniffing the air and ground exactly where we were standing 20 minutes before!!!! he had doubled back and started hunting us....

so now he's approx 230 yards away.. im on a knoll... so i lie down and get set up..mean while my buddy on camera was having techical difficulties getting it to work.... i think the situation was making concentrating very hard lol... so i mentally block him and his action sout and concentrate on the big brown guy in front of me.... is facing away so i whistle...... he takes small step and looks our way, not enough.. so i yell!!! "HEY" he turns more my way... quatered away shot... its now or never as i can tell he's about to bolt ..either away or at me :) and i squeeze off a barnes TTSX 165gr out of my 300 WSM x bolt!!!! and old grizz starts spining donuts..he's HIT!! but wait!!!! SHIT!!!!

in my scope i will NEVER forget what i was seeing...... HIM... running full out... head, shoulders and paws coming STRAIGHT at me !!! still strangely calm i jack a new round in... put cross hairs on his forehead...breath.. i have a fraction of a second before he disappears in a dip in the road and he would be out of sight then re appear much much closer then i wanted.... funny how time and everything slows down and how much goes thru your mind in these moments....... squeeze.. BOOM...... scope is empty.. no grizz?? did i hit him? did he hit dip and turn left down ravine? turn right and go up swell/ridge..... so we wait.

we wait about 10 minutes then slowly staying on high ground slowly circling around to where im hoping he is.... a little further and ill be able to see where he was when i shot the second time........ and what do i see....

awesome experince!! only ever wanted to shoot one grizzly and he was a shooter, head to tail, 7 feet, great claws, gorgoues color, no rub marks, nice big head!!! i guessed is weight in the 450/500 lbs range

Good job man nice bear !!! The Grizz I shot in the spring did the same thing spinning circles than right towards me even though it was a double lung and heart shot my friend thought I hit him in the ass .... Nothing adrenaline wise beats it !!!

If you aren't comfortable skinning the head and paws out, don't.

Most taxis will tell you they'd rather spend 20 minutes skinning, then 2 hours fixing your cuts :)

first shot enter furtehr back then i wanted with being quatered away and him shuffling around, entered just barley ahead of guts and exited out other side 12 inches back of front leg.. would have been a long, tense, shitty stalk on a wonded bear if not for 2nd head shot ...
