View Full Version : NorBC 2014 quest for goats

Hello everyone;

Before I get anyone to excited.. I will start by saying I have not harvested a billy yet this year. I decided to make a on going thread of my past, and future struggles up the mountains for the 2014 season. I've taken a few pics along the way, but nothing to fancy, and they're all from my cellphone. My biggest goal of this season is to harvest another mature billy, but this time with my bow. (also want to do it solo, but there is no way im turning down another guy willing to help pack ) So this could be a long thread everyone...

I was out putting in the hours scouting, and cutting trail well before opening weekend. I watched the goats in one area for the past month waiting for Aug 1 to strike. They were impossibly high. I still wonder if anyone has been to the top of that mountain. Any how I decided to blow off a rugby tourney, and head to the top above the goats on a solo quest for the long weekend. Kitimat Killer, and myself would glass every weekend, and plan a route to the top, pick out caming spots, and make game plans. Warniklz was kind enough to cut, flag, and show me a bunch of trails he made last year. So that was point "A" for this journey. I decided if I really wanted to succeed with my bow, I should leave the rifle at home. So I packed as light as possible, worked a half day, and was off. It didn't take long finding warrens old trail, but man was it ever grown in since the last time i hiked it. Who knew devils club could grow so fast? it was a slow hike through the timber trying to find each next piece of flagging tape in all that grown in crap. By the time I broke the first tree line I regretted not having a machete. The tall grass was well above my head. It was delightful trekking through it stumbling across countless beds, and the odd pile of grizz sh!t. Finally I reached the "easy" section. It was short grass, rocks, and steep. That was the moment I knew I did not train nearly hard enough for this season. I sucked back most of my bladder, and refilled it in the creek that runs down the mountain. I looked up to a small ledge above the next long timber section. This was my designated camping spot. After leaving the creek, and the easy part you come across a goat hunters worst nightmare. willows.. I picked my way up a cliff using a small knife edge that ran up the right. The other side of the cliff is a small canyon, but still a fall big enough to break your bones, and send you down the creek. After passing this its more willows, and tall grass. Finally I reach the tree line. I go up a ways until I come to another wall, and decide its time to take a break. I take off my pack, throw it on the ground, sit down, and rub my knees. I look over at my bow that's strapped to my pack, but something looks off about it.. Suddenly im overcome with anger, as I notice all my arrows are gone. They must have been ripped out of my quiver during the climb through the willows somewhere. I head down the mountain defeated, keeping my knife in reach. No arrows were recovered. This was also the worst birthday I've ever had in my life.

Weeks go by, but I decide to just keep glassing, and let the goats come lower. I start to train more. Cardio, shoot, cardio, shoot. I decided to try a single pin sight on my bow, and bought a HHA Optimizer.

Very comfortable at 50 yards

One day I get a txt from Kitimat Killer saying my goat is ready from the taxidermist.

http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q670/jdorrett/521C3258-6824-46E6-B92D-ADC004BAC7AB_zpsbb5sivhs.jpg (http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/jdorrett/media/521C3258-6824-46E6-B92D-ADC004BAC7AB_zpsbb5sivhs.jpg.html)

He did an awesome job, and it only took 6 months. This really got me pumped up for this season.

Theres lots of boring stuff, so ill skip ahead to some better parts. Finally goats are coming low. Very low. One day I spot 1 billy, 2 nannys with a kid each, and 1 nanny by herself. I decide to make a play, and I head up through one of warrens trails, that Kitimat Killer, and I reopened. There was lots of fog, as there usually is in this zone, so i decide to come from straight below. I know this is a don't while goat hunting, but at this time in the season I didn't have trail cut above the bluffs where they would bed down. I picked my way up the steep, steep, face. There was lots of fog, cracks, willows, and tall grass, to use as cover. I started gaining some good elevation, and remained undetected. Eventually I was in the bluffs where they were all bedded down. I could see the billy bedded above on a ledge about 200 yards above me, so i decide to make a move.

http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q670/jdorrett/F0CB4382-FFDD-4D59-A184-AA63C92AC077_zpsumz04yo7.jpg (http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/jdorrett/media/F0CB4382-FFDD-4D59-A184-AA63C92AC077_zpsumz04yo7.jpg.html)

During my stalk, I come across the one nanny that was by herself. I was heading up, and she was feeding coming down. She had no idea I was there at all. She kept coming, and eventually I ranged her at 42 yards. I just remember staring at her, and thinking to myself " no way im actually in bow range of these beasts. This could be all over so fast. Broadside, clear shooting lane. Just such a easy shot." As bad as I wanted to take the shot, I knew it wasn't right. I knew I wanted to take a billy, and not a nanny, but I also knew I wanted to take one with my bow really, really, really bad. I decided to let her be. I took out my phone to snap some pics. My phone was all wet, and there was no heat in my hands, so i could not even unlock it to take photos. Soon enough she was on her way heading down. Eventually another nanny popped out, this one with a kid. I rubbed my phone in my jacket, and blew on my hands until they were warm enough to activate the touch screen of my phone. They came down the same path, and I ranged them at 46 yards.

http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q670/jdorrett/1884F541-4B99-4EA6-AF90-0324587FCFC0_zps6zggofzv.jpg (http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/jdorrett/media/1884F541-4B99-4EA6-AF90-0324587FCFC0_zps6zggofzv.jpg.html)

It was pretty neat to be so close, and just watch them. The kid wandered way down the face, and soon enough I was between them. I think the kid spotted me first, and then the nanny. She would not follow the kid any lower, and it probably took 45 minutes before the kid came back up to her. The kid would scream for her, and ive never heard a goat make a noise in my life until that day. It sounded almost like a soft double jack rabbit predator call. No wonder every thing wants to eat them.. I kept moving up towards the billy, but by this time he was looking right at me. I tried hard to close the distance, but he kept moving up. I decided to stay right, and eventually i was kind of at his elevation, but i could not get in bow range. I ranged him at 118 yards. If i were Cameron Hanes maybe I would have taken the shot, but not this guy, not today. This right here was by far the hardest decision of my hunting career, and maybe even my life. I could have taken this billy with my rifle. 100 percent positive I would make the shot. Easy enough to retrieve him. Everything was perfect, except for the fact it would not be with my bow. It was only September, and the goats arent even rutting yet. They will come lower. I decided i would hopefully have plenty of more opportunities to take one with my bow. I snapped some pics, and just sat among the goats. And just watched them. It was late so I decided to head down the mountain, but this time not defeated. I may not have got a goat, but being in bow range for the first time was a reward itself. It was a huge rush of excitement, and it was a whole new level for me.

I was going to stirr this thread up. But i'll save that for something else...

Just make sure you tie one up for me. He better be 11+ and I don't want to work for them.

And how the frig is your cardio shot if you play rugby? You must be a forward...

Warren running a field, and walking up hill are two very different things... Unfortunately im not fit at either.

So recently there was another game changer when my new rifle arrived in the mail. Its making my archery quest even more difficult. Very tempted to try it out. I'm giving myself until the deep snow hits to finish this job with my bow. We will just say its a sheep rifle for now.

Its a .270wsm custom build from corlanes off of a T3 action. Scope is a little heavy, but she delivers. it weighed in just over 8lbs. Played at the range, and shes a real tac driver. I named her Oxsana.( sounds sexy when i say it )

Last weekend the goats were lower then ive ever witnessed them on that face, at any time of year. (Not the billys of course..) When I rolled in that morning there was already two fellas looking up at that face. We talked a bit, and they seemed pretty nice. They said they only had the one day to hunt, and offered to let me go instead. I told them they were there first, and to fly at her. I said i might come up a little ways just to glass. I also knew there was no way they were getting close to a billy that day... They said it took them 3 hours to get to the first bluff last year, so they were on the their way. Kitimat killer showed up, so we decided to hit the road, and glass a bunch of other mountains in the area. It was his wifes birthday, and somehow he managed to get the day off to glass, but he had to leave early. Later on that day i dropped him off at his car, and then i head up my trail to go glass, and watch this super low nanny, and kid. I made it to the bottom of the bluffs in 20 minutes, then started glassing. I had no sight of the other two men so i flipped my rain cover on my pack to the blaze orange. It was really cool too see this nanny, and kid only 150 yards from the trail. I walked over to the creek to fill my water, and get a nice seat on the grassy ridge. I brought up my binos, and started to watch the nanny feed. BANG! A cloud of rock smoke shot up from behind the nanny. The nanny cut up the bluff, and ran left into the willows, and the kid followed. I just stared dumb founded. My mind was blown. I've never witnessed such stupidity in my life. Finally I see the two guys climbing the bluff to where she was feeding. I hiked up to them, and we exchanged words. By the time I left neither party was happy. I took off to the trail, and watched them. They gave up, and started heading down. They didnt even look for blood in the right spot, and they didnt bother looking where the nanny ran off. When we where bickering, I told them that i was going to report them right away, and as soon as they were heading down, i knew i had to beat them to make good on that promise. I got their truck info, and plate numbers, then they came down and there was more arguing. They told me i was thinning out the herd by hunting billys. That i was some big shot for trying to tell them the negative effects on taking a nanny, especially with a kid. Then they told me they were going to report me for harassing them on their hunt, and while they practice their ancestors rituals. When I got into service I contacted the CO. He investigated everything, and made sure it was the right territory. He called me back, and told me that it sickens him, but it is legal for them to shoot a nanny with a kid. "But." he said.. They cant not try and properly recover the animal. The lack of effort from the events I told him was more then enough proof. The next day I went back up too see if there was any ravens around where that nanny ran too. There wasnt, but there was those two guys back up the mountain. The CO made them go back up, and properly search for her. They even apologized to me. It was nice to see justice. (well some what..) However their poor aim, and attempt on an animal from the other day was enough to send all the goats way back up top into no mans land.. The rest of my long weekend hunting was uneventful, and unproductive.

Fresh snow on the mountains at work today. I can't wait to get out there, and see where the goats are at now.

Not near enough goat hunting on here IMO! Thanks for posting NorBC . . . keep the play by play texts coming as I enjoy living vicariously through you. The combination of that coastal weather, vegetation and terrain makes this a rather extreme hunt . . . especially in your zone and then bow only and going it solo!
In the end patience and determination will pay off.

Nice rifle . . . what's with that NF scope? 😜

As SSS mentioned add a little white space to the text as some of us can't keep focussed or read well!

Well I just wrote a long story, but apparently it didnt work, and I lost everything I wrote. Guess ill do a short version now.

Ive been hunting lots lately. Been getting real close. Lately the weather has been garbage, but yesterday it was sunny, but windy. All this weather made the bluffs, and cliffs in my goat draw pure ice.

I met up with Kitimat Killer, and spotted two billies way up top on a face. We went over a game plan, and he went to go glass another area, and i was off. The goats were about 3/4 of a way up the mountain, and I had trail cut to just below them. I could use my trail, then scale a bluff ive never been on, get to a small ridge, drop left, and come down right on top of them. There is a lone tree on top of the mountain I could use as a landmark. Theoretically everything should work.

Once I made it to the top of the trail, I took one look at the icey rock face infront of me, and knew once I came up, I would need to find another way down. I strapped my bow to my back, and used alders to pull myself up for the better part of a hour. I finally made it to the top. I looked at my land mark tree, and knew it was just a bit of bush whacking higher, and I would be at the small ridge that I would follow to come down on top of them.

As I was breaking trail through the alders I looked up, and of course who is standing where he is not supposed to be. Mr Billy. I duck right away. My heart is pounding right now, im so scared to blow this stalk. I'm peeking through the brush, and hes looking right back at me. I pull out my binos, to get a good look at his horns. The sun just beamed down on them, and they put off quite the glare. I could see all his growth rings nicely, he definitely had some mass. It was too bright to see how long his horns were from my view, but I knew he was more than worthy for my arrow.

He watched the shrub I was behind for what seemed to be a hour. (probably only 20 minutes) The wind was almost unbearable. I wish I got a pick of his beard blowing sideways! Then he started to make his way down towards me. I kept trying to range him, but the small twigs, and brush wouldnt let me get a reading. He kept coming lower, and lower. I was sure god wanted me to get this goat today.

Soon the goat was at the same level as me, and then just below me. Finally I can range him. 61 yards. I'm more then comfortable making this shot, but it was just too windy. Like crazy wind. He started stomping the ground, and kicking dirt. I figured perfect hes going to bed down. I couldn't climb straight across to him, because of ice slopes, so I decided to go up a bit, and cut over.

It looked like he laid down, so I ditched my gear, grabbed my bow, and rang finder, and made a move. I climbed slowly over top, and eased my way down a icy face. I popped my head up over a nub ,and saw his dirt patch he was kicking. It turns out he wasnt bedding down. He was just being a silly rutting goat, and kicking dirt all over himself. I looked around, and didnt see him. I started to move down more, and right more. I was almost at the top of the cliff where they were bedded down that morning. The wind was blowing so hard, and it was hard to keep my balance. I was sure they winded me.

Suddenly something caught my eye, I look over, and the billy is taking off. Not up hill, but down hill. Thats the moment my heart shattered. I dont think he saw me. Im assuming he winded me. I dont know if I moved to fast, but I was going so slow, and careful. Shortly after I saw the other goat running down hill as well. They made their way down, and across the face. Then climbed into some alders. They stayed there broadside, and 220 yards for the rest of my time up there.

I sat on the cliff, and cursed. My eyes were watering, and it probably wasnt only from the strong winds.

This last pic sums up all my hard work. Its the closest ive been to letting a arrow fly at one of these beasts. That wind was crazy. Part of my wishes I took the shot, but its good i didnt. There will be more chances.

Well I just wrote a long story, but apparently it didnt work, and I lost everything I wrote. Guess ill do a short version now.

This happens when your session 'times out'. When composing a long thread, it's best to select and copy it just before trying to post. If you've taken too long, the message will be blank (lost) and you'll need to log in again. If you've copied it, you can go back to the thread, start another reply, and paste everything back in. I learned the hard way, but haven't lost any more big long posts.

Anyway, awesome thread - looking forward to reading more!

Today I saw the same billy I was chasing earlier this week, and pretty close to the same spot. Right away I had the same game plan, but this time he was sunning himself on the bluffs above my trail. I decided to climb the main face, get above him, and push right on top of him.

Once I was near the top of the mountain 2 hrs later, I was getting close to where I could cross over. Anyone who spends a lot of time in the mountains will hear slides. Usually in the winter. Today I heard rocks coming down, and before I could get an idea of where, they came zinging past my head. My friend, and I got against the steepest bluff beside us, crouched, and placed are packs over are heads. It went on for probably 2 minutes. Rocks from the size of my fist, to basketballs were riffling over us, and between us. I thought forsure bigger rocks were coming right away, and it was our end. That never happened. The rocks stopped, and we both have eachother that look. We got out of the main bluff area, and decided to press on.

Once we reached our landmark rock, we knew we could start cutting over at the goat. Climbing through the bluff on my right, I look up, and once again the billy was not where he bedded down. It ended up being shaded where he was sunning himself, so I'm assuming he followed the sun to his new bed. I ranged him at 130 yards. I decided we should sit, and wait because it worked so well last time. He wasn't falling for it this time. After a hour of that I figured I had nothing to lose, so I threw on the paint suit. I ended up getting a little closer, but he decided to go higher, and be safe.

We Had lunch, and made our way down. Saw a lot more goats down low, but off into alder country. But that was ok. I have a vendetta with this billy now anyways. Pretty interesting day any how. I only know one other person to be in a rock Avalanche, and it just so happens it was on the same face!

Will be testing my luck again tomorrow. Hopefully a better outcome!

Looking forward to your success. Those rock slides are dangerous. Me and some buddy's almost got taken out while hiking to some glaciers in the telkwa pass a couple years back. It wouldn't stop and we turned back after buddy got smoked in the leg by a baseball size rock. Playing real life plinko on a hillside really dampens the mood

Well today my friend rymac, and I were out early glassing. There was a bunch of goats out, most of them I wasn't too concerned about, as they were off in no mans land. The billy I've been chasing the last few weeks didn't want to show himself, so I decided to watch the other goats for fun.

All ol of a sudden, this tank walks out of nowhere, and starts harassing this kid. As soon as I put the spotter on him it didn't take long to decide he was worth putting in the effort for no mans land. Instead of taking the cut trail we B-lined it through the bush. It was crappy alders, and but brush until we reached the timber. After a long steep climb through the thick timber it was more alders until the high cliffs.

We knew we were above him, but we had to cross over. As we reached the first bluff some ice started falling. What do you know.. Another rock Avalanche. It would settle down, and start up all day. Long story short we crossed it. After that we eased ourselves down some bluffs until we were cliffed out. I could see the kid, or young young young goat ( just had knubs, and by itself) but I couldn't see the billy. Finally after a hour the billy got up, and walked out. He was over 10" yards away, so we decided to head back the way we came.

We went back across the slide, then made our way down some alders, and recrossed the slide below the cliffs. We made our way across on the small ledge below the cliffs, until we hit another small cliff. This time 60 yards from the kid bedded down. Still no billy in site. We waited another hour, and still nothing. I noticed the sun was on us, and they were bedded down in the shade. Since I blew so many stalks this year due to goats following the sun up the mountain I decided to sit still.

Another hour goes by.

I start to get cold, but I wait it out. Sure enough a short time later the billy rises. And he looks decent! I wait it out, and eventually as I thought he decides to make his way up. It took him awhile but he got right below the cliff I was on, and I had no shot. He was making his way up, and I had a little window to shoot, before a wall on my right blocked him. Finally he was open. I range him quickly. 35 yards. I draw my bow back. I make sure my bow is level. He is now stopped, and broad side. I let it fly. I see it hit him, but no thud. It went right through the hair!

The billy doesn't like this. He starts to scramble. He's making his way up again, and fast. I range him again at 55 yards. I knock another arrow, draw back, and take my time. I let it fly. Another miss... I'm starting to wonder if I did fall on my bow to many times in all this rugged country. I'm even doubting myself. I quickly range him again. 70 yards. He's still moving quick, and up for the timber. I knock my third arrow. I draw back, and follow him. He's moving up and quick. I hold just above his left shoulder as he's quartering away. My head is clear. Everything is right. I squeeze my shoulders, and my finger clicks my release.

THWAP!

The billy jumps up, and really takes off straight into the timber. I exhale, and put my face down on the rocks infront of me. I know I hit him good that time.

We wait 20 minutes, and head over. The bluff he was in while I was shooting at him was actually a lot worse then I thought. We get to the alders, and see some blood. The. We see lots of blood. Then we see the billy. About 40 yards from where I got that last arrow in.

I put in a lot of work this year. A lot. I passed up a lot of rifle shots, and I blew a lot of bow stalks. I'm glad as hell I waited though, because I just got this once in a lifetime archery billy. He was 9.5 years old, and measured out at a whopping 10 3/4". I was happy with any billy, but this one really shows all the long hard work I put in. Still shaking even as I write about this experience 4 hours later. We took a million photos, caped, and deboned him. And made it across that bluff just before dark. By the time we reached alders it was dark. We both had head lamps so the hike out wasn't that bad. Just really heavy and dark. Few hours later we made it to the truck. He's already inspected, and off to the taxidermist tomorrow!

Well the taxidermist, and I just green scored him at 53 4/8"s. I'm kind of freaking out now. Experienced members like BC Billies, and coach told me it would be that big, but I just couldn't buy it. It's a honor to be so privileged to have so many humble, and modest mentors from this site, help me over the years. Half of the people on here got pictures seconds after the goat went down. They saw it even before family, and there is a good reason why! So thanks for the help, and putting up with me HBC!

Anyway I don't know how many of you follow Pope and Young, but if you do you'll know if my goat doesnt shrink, or just shrinks less than a 1/2" we got the new #1 archery goat!

Now enjoy the video, and don't laugh behind my back!

I don't think I can anymore!! I just had him green scored by a very credible Hbc member. We wanted to know the worst outcome, and we always gave it to the smaller number. He said a lot of measurements could go either way! So the new green score is 51 2/8"s.. It's not a world record. But " it's a fu€k of a goat ".. Worst case, I ended up getting a +10" goat scoring +50" with a bow. And I hope some how I can live with that :) sorry for goving false hope to you guys!

What a lot of guys would do for a 50"+ goat . . . let alone with a bow! Good to know my initial guess of 51" . . . maybe 52" was inline. Thought for a bit that I may have to recalibrate! 😉. Will be a dandy set of twin billies on the wall.

Congrats again on a beauty of a goat. A jump from a green score of 51 2/8s to 52 6/8s is quit a bit Im guessing the guy who green scored it was going low with all his measurements. Any chance you could post the final length and base measurements for a comparison to the green scores you posted.

The single pin site is pretty awesome. You can actually see the animal, and not a cluster of pins. You really have to make sure the bow is level. And also you really have to take your time setting it up with the right sticker!

Awesome story and congrats on the goat. Made me smile the whole time thinking of my solo goat hunt. I had a goat draw this year and being my first attempt at it in a very unfamiliar area and solo to boot it was crazy. I destroyed my knee so the trip was short lived came home with my tail between my legs. Was an amazing trip though. The scenery was unforgettable an adventure only a goat hunter has experienced. Extremely peaceful. Being way up there and watching goats pass on the ridge line was more then fulfilling for a first time solo goat hunt. I am hooked and will train hard this year in hopes of getting the same draw. Although solo may not be the best choice as there were many grizzlies around I was with in 100 yards of 2 young male 2-3 year olds, very humbling at the shear size and strengths of these animals. Big props to you and unbelievable to do with arrow as well. Congrats again
