I've been wanting to walk some game trails in an interesting area of cuts, buffered creeks, and mature timber since spring bear season. I shot at a huge boar near a creek in this spot and missed and its been on my mind since. I also found the game trails through the timber again so I thought I'd have another look for signs of that bear and see if I could scare up a buck. Unfortunately I decided to scrap the backpacking plans since the area I wanted to spend the week in was logged. But the spot I've been thinking about since spring was still the same as I remembered it. At first light on my first morning there I watched the biggest cut for an hour or so but didn't see anything in the rain. Got antsy so I headed into the timber thinking the deer were probably waiting out the rain under cover. I had a good slog through the bush as the rain let up, and pushed this guy out to a rise near a draw a few hundred yards away. I was lucky that he stopped just long enough for me to get a glimpse of him, find a tree to lean up against, and let my heart settle a bit from the bush beating. One shot to both lungs and he was down. It's my biggest deer so far and the bonus was the fresh big bear beds and scat in the timber, so I'm confident he's still there. The buck is headed to the freezer and the big boar will likely head to his den for the winter. Relieved and very happy with this shorter than expected hunt.
