Does anyone hunt blacktails in the valley bottoms? To my understanding people tend to focus on higher elevations especially in areas with a lot of hunting pressure. I am thinking of trying some new tactics this year. I have certainly seen does in the valley bottoms (often on the way in or out of a hunting area). If there are does, there should be bucks lurking. Any thoughts?

Cheers,

The trick is not high or low elevation it is to hunt BT where others don't.

Good hunting them on the Islands in the Fraser. I have shot lots in Hatzic Prairie, In mid October.

Haven't had much luck shootingthem in the bottoms but have captured plenty of bucks on trail cams down low.

It varies. I mean there's blacktail that live in plateau areas without any real valley or mountain features and of course they can be found at what resembles the Alps with obvious deep valleys between the mountains. I've normally hunted somewhat mountainous areas and I feel there's a higher percentage of does and young ones in the valley bottoms and the mature bucks higher for much of the year. That all changes come the rut and after into the winter when the big ones come down to breed than often winter low too. But there's no absolutes I've seen does up high in the winter and mature bucks right at sea level in the middle of summer.

id look for trails, walk timber edges in cut block, glass across ravines. sometimes when its raining, just walk jump something, maybe trail it. i perfer to hunt the steeper slopes, even in lower elevation timber

I always hunt low for blacktails during rut.

Quadrakid said it right. "They are where you find 'em"
