Havent been out yet. Will be going out for a week next week near Beaverdel. Heard one howling near Lassie lk in early Sept. Hope they have
moved on or it'll probably be a not very productive hunt. Ive heard of a few sightings near Big White, or south east of Kelowna.

I got these 2 a couple days ago while deer hunting near loon lake. After I shot the first one in a cut block the other one came trotting out of the bush right at me and my buddy. Shot him at less than 50 yds. Heard a bunch more Howling around there as well.

Nice shooting Brig. All I have seen is tracks. Some you could set a softball in and have track still showing. I wonder what the age difference is when the claw is 3/8 inch long and the one 3/4 inch long. They are so hungry they are eating dead skunks.

2 good ones brig. Did you try howling some more of the pack in after those two went down?

No, it didn't even cross my mind to try calling in more wolves. I was just surprised to see any wolves at all.

If fate ever gives you another chance, try howling after the gunshot echos fade. Lots of time pack members will come to investigate. Again, good job!

Was kind of thinking the same thing.. While I know the wolves are getting a little out of hand and several of my fave hunting spots have been basically over run with them but I don't want to just shoot em for the sake of shooting them.. good question..

I hope it was the Cache Creek Loon... I will be there on the 17th for 8 days. I haven't had much luck with wolves up their yet although I know they are quite a few around the area.

Shot south of loon lake North of cache creek.

Thats what I figured, looks like that area more so than the north side of the lake.

What do you do with most predators after you harvest them? Most predators are most likely not eaten so regardless what you do with the pelt, claws or skull you will be disposing of the carcass. Nothing goes to waste in the bush even though you may not think it is good table fair you will in turn be feeding some critters and if you leave the carcass where you shot it you will be probably feeding the pack that you harvested from.

Saw one last year less than two miles from Lake Cowichan and he wasn't even scared of us.He turned around and sat down on the bank.I think he was old and living off of gut piles.

So I can shoot it and leave it there?

You must at least pack the hide back to your 'residence'. Rest of the carcass can stay in the bush.

I believe it is not mandatory to take the animal but I do believe you have to report it to the ministry with in 30 days. I would review the regs, don't take my word for it, lol.

In the areas of NBL and NCS is it mandatory to take anything?

The regulations say that NBL and NCS means that the unit hosts mountain caribou at risk, and wolf harvest is encouraged. Any wolf harvest in the NBL units should be reported to assist with the various studies that are underway.

However, the hunting method restriction #34 still appears to apply: the hide of a fur-bearing animal must be removed to the hunter's home, tannery, taxidermist, etc. The meat of fur-bearing animals (including wolf), grizzly bears, and cougars does not have to be removed.

Some nice photos of wolves....

I've hunted the area around Loon Lake between Clinton, Bonaparte Lake and all around Hihium for many years and have never come across wolves either by sight or sound. I've seen lots of coyotes, black bears and the occasional cougar, but never wolves. Nicely done.

Just came back from a 2 day hunt up there on Sunday and Monday. Didnt see much of anything for a day and a half, but came across a nice young single spike muley just before noon and brought him home.

Hope the rest of your Loon Lake trip was successful.

Seen a pack of 5 in the bonaparte area last October. Never got a shot off:( I'm in the Interlakes area now and had them howling all around me last night and again this morning while I was trying to call my nephew in his leh bull. Maybe I've got my calls mixed up and that's why he hasn't got his bull yet

We road hunted around Hihium last week and we saw wolf track on most of the roads we were on. The road running above the headwaters swamp of Hihium was covered in wolf track. We found a few cat tracks as well. Looked like a tough place for ungulates to relax!

Talking to a guy who owns land outside of Chetwynd, 2 wks ago, he had a pack of 18 cross his property, by the time he got back to his house and rifle, the pack was gone, and he couldn't get them to come back.
Way to many Wolves now that's for sure.

Saw the pack last weekend at about 800 m, and decided moose hunting could wait. I loaded the gun and walked about 150 m closer from the quad. I howled and they at first they did not hear me, then all of a sudden they stopped and turned and all came running towards me, 4 black ones and a big grey. It was pretty intimidating so I backed up to try and get a rest set up and due to the deep grass and being out numbered, worked my way right back to the bike. They howled and barked and carried on for about 5 minutes and then rejoined the big grey. This time I howled again and the grey one had had enough and he led the pack towards me. They came over a small hill at about 220 yrds and I originally aimed at the grey, but decided on a black one and shot it. The pack ran in the bush but I kept howling and another black one came out I shot and missed but waited a few more minutes and it came out again and I did not miss. Although they look black they are mostly grey with a small white blaze on their chests, They are females and each weight about 80 or 90 lbs. Good friend was kind enough to help me skin them! Atually did not smell too bad, glad i had a cold!

Glad to hear of some Loon Lake wolf population reduction. We saw 65 does/yearlings and ONLY 2 fawns from this year. We were SW of Loon Lake.

Saw some huge tracks, but no in person encounters. A lot fewer Grouse this year as well.

MOL, nice work man. A bit intimidating eh.

Talking to the Region 4 biologist, we've identified that the wolf season in region 4 is different for different MU's Some starting Sept 1, some on Sept 10th. Hoping to make some changes to the regs on this.

Some fellow bowhunters got pushed out of their elk area by about 10 wolves. And not far from town. No season in that area at the time. One of the fellows was back out there trying to get a bull with his wife in the 6 pt season and his elk calling brought the pack in. He was able to take one wolf out of the pack.

Will be a nice hide once tanned.
