This is how I spent my friday evening. I did a little fab work with some free material and came up with this....

About the only thing I am going to buy is a hing so the door will open from the top and swing down. I am also trying to come up with a way to have an adjustable air intake. Right now I am thinking of drilling holes along the top of the tank and having a plate that will cover the holes but it will be attached with recessed magnets so I can slide the plate over the holes to adjust air flow. The legs are adjustable/removable and I also have a plan in the works to make the "chimney" modular with a functional dampener as well. I will also add a small cook plate to the top of it. Then it will get a good burn, hit it with the wire wheel and paint her stove black. I also had thoughts of lining the bottom of the tank with clay to help protect the steel from burning out and it would also help retain some heat after the fire dies down.

If you have your air intake where its entering the stove near or preferably under the front of your wood, it will give a lot better combustion.

I'd hinge the door on one side.

That way you can simply swing it open and closed for a reload and don't have to fumble and fight gravity in the dark.

Where does the propane go in now?

Very cool - that'll work well in your wall tent! Maybe put the air intake in the lower part of the door and use fiberglass rope to seal the door opening?

Air tanks work good also. My neighbor built one for his unimog. Its 24"long. He used 4" exhaust pipe. Had his pipes all flared so he can take it apart. Works very well.

Could use a flat plate on top , somewhere to set the tea pail.

I am going to finish it off tomorrow. I bought a piano hinge that I will cut to size and add air intake holes below the door. Now I just need to find a shelter to put this in lol.

You can buy stamps for that.

I finished it up today, I got the door attached with a spring loaded latch, drilled some air inlet holes. The center hole has a tube running to the back of the stove to feed air. I still have to come up with a way to choke off the air supply. I also have to make the chimney modular so I can take it right apart. I did a good burn inside it today to burn off the paint, while it was still hot as hell I wire wheeled the burnt paint off. I stood up and my upper arm touched the stove pipe and it gave me a good burn. After it cooled off I hit it with some bbq paint rated for 1200 deg F so I hope it will last.

Center weld a nut via a coulple short pieces of round stock and use a bolt with a round plate slightly larger than the hole you're trying to cover. Might be able to incorporate a piece of fire rope to make a form fitted seal. To my eye, you've got plenty of air flow capability.

Beach sand makes a good bottom liner for heat as well. Though the sides just above sand line will be the next weak link. A welded reinforcement when the time comes should get you back in business for quite some time.

Nice work buddy.

I built my own this year.
Pretty satisfying using something I built myself.

I had to increase my air door vent after first trip to get it burning hotter.

Also a great addition is a map gas torch for middle of the night, relights of the fire.

Nice work, are you happy with the size?

I was thinking of doing the same thing but using a size up from a 20lbs tank.

You could cut 3/4 of a hole, drill into the center of it, get a small piece of sheet metal, maybe 1/8"? Drill your holes in that all the way around then one in the center and use a small bolt and nuts to secure it to the propane bottle ^_^
