Anyone use the Weatherby 270 for deer, sheep and elk in BC? Or anything else.

I had one for a short while several years back, one flat shooting SOB I think it was a bit less than 3 inches high at a hundred yards for a 300 yard zero with 130 grs at 3500 ft/s. No hunting experience with it for you though unfortunately.

I am sure it will perform very well to fantastic on the game you mentioned. I wouldnt be chasing griz with it but if you bumped into one and shit went sideways, its much better than a lot of other cartridges. (and rocks)lol
I would load it with Barnes bullets exclusively, as they are a tough bullet that will enhance the performance of this high velocity round. JMO

If Roy hadn't invented my beloved 257 weebee, the 270 would be my cartridge. I also use a second best 270 short and really enjoy it. I have packed it exclusively on grizz hunts and figure it will shoot a hole clear through any grizz I may find! Headin out this morning for the weekend and I think the 270 will go with me. Mine shoots the 130 hornady gmax best so 65 gr of re22 gets that bullet moving.

I had one for a while, flat shooter that's for sure. Makes the 300 and 400 yd gongs a joke. I always used premium bullets in case I had a close shot. I was getting 3500 with 130's and 3300 with 150's, I think
Ya, with a 3" high at 100 set up, just hold on fur out to about 3/4 of a mile....

Just picked one up a couple weeks ago. Early German production. Pictured below:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album307/Ian_with_ram_Em.jpg

The Fellow who used to own it is a Very Good Buddy. He took deer, many sheep and several elk with it. All one-shot kills, even with elk out past 400.

Packed it as my Go-To on our last foray:

Unfortunately it was FAR too hot and the moose had yet to wander down from the hills as of yet.
Looking forward to using it, and will letcha know as it goes...

Went with Barnes Triple Shocks in 130 grain. Fast & Flat!

Cheers,

I have used a 270 Wby since 70's Awesome firearm. Have taken everything with it you could imagine an more. Tight, flat shooter.

It's not a common cartridge used in BC, but it will work just fine, of course. It's similar performance to the 270WSM which has received a big following.

Grew up with a .270win, always wanted the wby lol. If the .270win can down moose/elk I'm sure the wby will do it with ease. 27wsm would be easier for ammo...

Hey Nog, thats a beauty rifle. Looks like it has some stories to tell... best of luck and sharp shootin!
Interesting thing about those early season moose, sometimes you have to head up into the hills after them. Just sayin. Lol....
I make mention to this because I arrowed a spike/fork bull moose in the kootenays. He was at 1800m!!!!
Thank God for quad!
Anyways good luck and great advice, as always!

Used mine on many deer hunts. Performance was very good, only be sure to use premiun bullets due to the high vel.

Hey Nog, thats a beauty rifle. Looks like it has some stories to tell...

It certainly does! According to the serial number, this particular rifle was built by J.P. Sauer & Sohn ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauer_%26_Sohn ) of West Germany back in 1960. Info regarding dates of manufacture can be found on this site: http://www.weatherbycollectors.com/

It is interesting that the words "Patent Pending" appear under the Mark V designation. In 1964, Weatherby received their patent for the Mark V action, and the letter "P" was added to the serial numbers, starting with P1000. In all the time since it was "born", it ingested only around 300 - 350 rounds down the tube, and is still an extremely accurate rifle as a consequence. Quite a few noticeable differences between this one and the 70's circa 300 Weatherby Mark V I own. Even more noticeable is the serious reduction in recoil! The 270 is a real pleasure to shoot in comparison!

Feel like I am carrying a little piece of history when packing it around out there!
Hope I can in some small fashion live up to it's expectations...

Although the area we hunted was quite high, my perception is that the moose were even higher yet. As we hunt chiefly on foot - hiking in from either base camp or a small boat into the areas we wander - our options for those higher areas were quite limited. Access in would have been of super-human proportions, and if you did drop one up there, you'd better be packing your fork (as that is the ONLY way you'd ever get it out!). Couple of the Ladz headed back in for the season-ender. Unfortunately I am a tad too strapped to make that commitment (would preclude the rest of the season's forays - something I was not prepared to give up). Wishing them the Best of Luck in the next couple of days...

He very much is a Dandy! Over 44" of horn! That fellow took quite a few Biggies through his hunting career, certainly knew his stuff!
I am proud to pack his rifle and hope to be able to do it a little "justice" over the next few seasons...

It's similar performance to the 270WSM which has received a big following.

Actually the 270 Weatherby is to the 270 WSM as the latter is to the standard 270 WIN.

http://www.sportingshootermag.com.au/images/dmImage/SourceImage/SPS_firearms_may09_pic2.jpg

L to R: .270 Winchester, .270 WSM and .270 Weatherby Magnum

The case volume is about 6 grains lower for the WSM vs the Weatherby. Accordingly the 270 WBY is about 150 fps faster with weights up to 130, above that the Weatherby takes over and is closer to 200 faster with 150s (handloads). These are approximately the same differences that are found between the 270 WIN and the 270 WSM btw.

"This is the way I sum it up: if you like the .270 calibre and yearn for true magnum performance, the .270 Weatherby may not be the only choice, but no other shows flatter trajectory or is harder hitting over long ranges."

Sounds about right for a weatherby chamber cut with plenty of freebore, bet a wsm with the same freebore would be close to same velocity? My last 264wm I had chambered with 3/4" freebore and it was some fast, I hit 3300+fps with a 140 grain, but accuracy wasn't there. No doubt it will serve you well!

Methinks so...

And she doesn't have many issues in the "accuracy" department

What is there to say? It was a Great One running over 44" of horn. Well historic hunt at this point, and another Man's tale to tell if he so desires.

A boo at another Great One he took with the same rifle:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album307/Ian_packiing_ram_1.jpg

My Buddy was quite the hunter in his day. Took several other good rams, and a lot more. A few more pix (of course with the rifle again) to illustrate:

Thompson Ram:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album721/Thompson_ram_1.jpg

Another good Stone:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album720/Ian_with_ram_in_meadow.jpg

More Stones:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album725/2_Rams_in_camp.jpg

Goat Retrieval:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album307/Ian_with_goat.jpg

And I'll toss up a couple more to try and help answer the original question as to just how well the 270 Weatherby performs on BC game...

Cheers,
Nog

In addition to sheep, he hunted damn near everything else in this province:

Whitetail:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album307/Whitetail_buck.jpg

Mulies:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album307/Ian_packiing_mulie_1.jpg

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album715/Big_mulie_1.jpg

Caribou:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album716/Glatheli_hunt_4.jpg

And although most would consider this caliber a little on the light side for Grizz, there are times a Man has to do what a Man Has To Do!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/album307/Ian_aiming_at_bear_1.jpg

Kind of explains that "carrying a piece of history" thought I have when packing it...

So, as for the original question: I personally think the 270 Weatherby Mag is well suited to the vast majority of game you'll encounter in BC. Hand-loading provides more than adequate medicine for anything ranging from blacktails up through sheep, big mulies, elk and even moose. Can't go far wrong with this selection IMHO.

Nog

Light colored Stone. Definite. His Best and a True Biggie!

Now i recognize that guy he wrote a few stories for BC Outdoors .I saw that goat pic in one of his stories.

He was (and is) a rather prolific Outdoors Writer. Would have really liked to have known him back when he was hunting and perhaps get in on some of those wonderful forays! Now he sticks mainly with writing about fishing, although I do get to live vicariously though his tales of his many many BC hunts.
And of course, I now pack the rifle he used so successfully on the majority of them...

I'm actually having a Remington 700 Classic re barreled into a 270 Weatherby. I also have 700 Classic in 270 Win. I'm re barreling from a 338 Win mag so I needed to stay with a "magnum" or buy a new bolt to go with another 30-06 size cartridge. Can you tell I like the 270 caliber. Since I've passed the 70 mark by a couple of years I've moved to cartridges that don't kick so bad. I still have a 375 a Ruger and a 416 Remington if I need something that big. I've used them in Africa!

Thanks all. Your comments have been great fun.

Sounds like a right interesting build! Would certainly like a look at your finished creation, and perhaps a few of your thoughts on it's performance once you have had the time to do so... http://bigshotsbc.ca/images/smilies/Pozitive.gif

Will do. It will be a few months before done. This gunsmith (a great fellow) re barreled my 416 Rem as well and it turned out very nice, also a Rem. He's a real pro...now in his mid-70's and is a bit slow but worth the wait. I went to Africa with him in 2012 and shot a wonderful Eland....big fellow. I used my 375 Ruger on him. I'll keep folks posted. I really appreciate the folks of this forum!!
