Not a long story. Was out in the woods coming home from visiting some contractors when i decided to check out a spot my buddy had bumped some cows the week before. Found some tracks on the road and decided to pull over to investigate, more to just scout out the area for a future day of hunting. Tracks looked fresh so I said 'why not' and let a bugle rip. Got an immediate response from about 500yds up the hill. At this point I was standing right beside my truck still wearing all my hi vis from work. I ditched the vis and ran down the road to get away from the truck and try and find a shooting lane to call him into. We matched bugles for 15min or so until he suddenly came crashing into partial view at about ten yards coming straight at me. I chirped to stop him which worked, but he immediately started beating the piss out of a 4" aspen. Even though he was only ten yards I had trouble getting a count as he would stop thrashing for more than a second or two and I could never see a whole antler at a given time. I shuffled over a couple feet on my knees which enabled me to his one antler. This got his attention and as he turned his head to look behind him i counted 3 up top and 3 on the bottom BOOM. He went down immediately but popped back up to his feet and disappeared into the alder/aspen jungle. After about a minute or so I heard the unmistakeable crash of an elk piling up. Went in immediately and found him about 100yds in completely expired. My 2nd bull elk in 4yrs of trying. Not a brute but respectable.

Yup. Way to go. I know a few guys who find em like that. Brambles comes to mind.... Others of us have sinned in a previous life and are bound to have to work hard for our rewards.

Mackenzie area. I have the unfair advantage of scouting 300 days per year (work in the bush) to find these spots and coworkers feeding me info. I have had to work hard on other game, swamped canoes, ball busting pack outs, etc. I'm a big dude with a rebuilt knee, if they wanna make it easy for me who am I too argue ;-)

You have to listen very carefully because the tracks don't call very loudly................

Should be a good eater. Surprising amount of fat on it and wasn't all beat up.
