I was looking forward to the rare opportunity to get out just the wife and I for a few days of hunting. Don’t get me wrong I love hunting with the kids (3 and 6), but you can move around a little quieter without them!

My folks flew in to watch the kids while we escaped, by the time everything was settled we got out of town a little later than I hoped. Sarah and I decided to set up the trailer and do a little cruise with the last hour or so of daylight and see if you could find a spot to hike into the following morning.

We arrived at our hunting spot and soon saw 3 deer head into the bush, I knew they would enter a clearing if we could get up the hill ahead of them. I arrived to see 2 does and a 3 point move through the clearing, we weren’t able to find them after that. Hiked back to the truck and continued on. Another few minutes down the road I see a white tail disappear into the bush, but couldn’t tell what it was. So on we go. Just a we crest the next rise, I see a buck feeding in the cut block. I say to Sarah, “there’s a buck, and it’s a nice one!”

She slowly gets out of the truck and finds a suitable rest. She won’t take anything but a perfect shot, pretty much 100% broad side. Although she shoots 1” groups a 100m with here 7mm-08, that is what she feels comfortable with.

This buck was quite cooperative and didn’t seem too bothered by our presence. Finally he turn broadside and BOOM went down in a heap, a few kicks but the 120g TTSX did its job. Sarah was proud of this 4 point as her first buck. We prefer to hike and glass, but went you are offered a gift like that you can’t turn it down!

We loaded him up and headed off back to camp. The night temps didn’t get down as cold as I would have liked, but good enough. Regardless we headed back into town to drop him off at the butches first thing in the morning as the meat would not have lasted in the 27 degree heat!

We did return to finish our hunt, I passed on a few smaller bucks and couldn’t get a shot off on a similar buck. Nice to have the freezer replenished a bit, hope I can add an elk to it next week.
