My son and I were in a area with lots of fresh elk sign and found a great spot to sit tight and do a little bugling. We heard a response off in the distance and did a little cow call to generate some interest.
Coming around the corner walking down the middle of the road was 3 people, all about 3ft apart, one was bugling, one was cow calling and the 3rd was holding a cut out of cow elk swinging it around, like the guy does in Penticton holding the little ceaser pizza sign. My first thought was there must be a camera on us to see our response. My question is has anyone ever use elk decoys?
I think they need to refine their tactics, we didn't stick around to talk to them
Cheers

Always wanted to try a Montana cow elk decoy to provide a visual for a bull closing in, especially when going solo.

I believe decoys have merit, but not for walking 3 abreast down a FSR road.......

I have 2 montana elk decoys...never deployed them though...haven't really found the spot to do it as I never seem to be in the elk when I attempt to hunt them

And that is why you never use a bull decoy.

Silly buggers, trust the cow had her Last Will & Testament in order and properly witnessed.

here is a story from last year in okanagan. Hunter stops vehicle on old forest service road, walks down road with full size decoy to set up and bull elk walks out of the bush to greet him. Oops, didn't have his gun. Backs up behind decoy back to truck while bull stays put, gets gun from vehicle and shoots bull. My hunting partner got the story from a friend of a friend so he bought his elk decoy this year.

I had an cow elk decoy set up and it brought in a cougar at 11 paces and I was in a tree stand. Some tense moments.

Don't forget to tape some reeds on the exhaust. If your going to look like a Elk you might as well sound like one too
