I have noticed a bird call that sounds very similiar to the eeeooo sound of a cow elk mew. Does anyone know the species of bird? It is a bird call i hear frequently in the timber and in town (invermere).

too funny you posted this thread, i was in the tree stand last week and could have sworn there was a herd of cows surrounding me in the timber! until i eventually realized they were infact just birds

probably a flicker (type of woodpecker) though canada jays can also mimic cow elk calls perfectly if they're in the mood for a little fun at a hunters expense....

Not to try and Jack the thread but it goes the same with the snapping of trees on a cold morning as the sun comes up gets my heart going every time lol

Crows and ravens can make a lot of different calls.

The infamous cow elk bird. But once you have heard a elk there is no mistaken them.

amen.
I stalked a moose in the trees the other year.
I could hear him snapping branches, etc.
you could tell this was something large, what else could be in there?
so quietly I make my way through a stretch of trees before finally seeing a swampy little area open ahead.
even more slowly and quietly I creep forward, excited as hell that I'm nearing a moose.
now just to catch sight an see if it's the elusive...............I-m-m-y.
then I catch sight of the big, stupid, bull damn cow rooting around in the grass.
