Quite sure. Is it a hybrid? :)

Seeing as how the nearest Mule Deer range is about 600 miles to the west.........

WoodOx
03-17-2007, 12:18 PM
Pretty sure those are fallow/axis deer horns.

lapadat
03-17-2007, 12:22 PM
They are Axis Deer antlers and they will only ever grow 3 times...with the exception of the brow tine. Apparently a trophy-quality deer will grow 30+ inch antlers (base to longest tip)

The body of a fallow deer is nearly identical with the major difference being more palmation to thier headgear.

Apologies for the attempted high-jack!!

This is a matching set from a blacktail found on Anvil Island in Howe Sound. Was on a bit of a hike up the mountain and saw the one shed as I was bushwhacking and did a bit of a look around the area and found the match about 30 yards away.

Hopefully this "posting pictures thing will work for me".:frown:

Whoopee.....I'll try one more.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/IMG_0595.JPG

I realized after I took the pics that something to compare to for size would have been good to add into the pic. Rookie shedder here, so I will know better for next time.

At what elevation are you guys finding your Blacktail sheds? I've logged well over 100 hours in the field this year and have only stumbled upon 2 sheds. Both were at the 1000 meter mark. I'm about ready to give up being a shed hunter.

I came across this BT Buck this morning. Looks like a healthy mature deer with good potential.

Thanks Mark....I wish I was not such a 'rook' and added something as a size reference  as it is a pretty good 2 point for an in-bred island buck. It was a hike that turned into a search for "bone". (I am pretty sure that is sheddin' terminology). I was just happy to find one and then the hunt was on for #2 and lo and behold I found it after about 10 minutes of digging around. :)

Lap...these were found on an island so not quite the same as searching the high elevations of the mainland but Anvil Island has some good height to it and gets snow capped in the winter. These were found probably not much higher than about 400 meters???

Looking like the end is in sight. I had a great start but pounded a ton of ground the last few weeks with limited success. My year total is 107 and I think I'm about done. Things are just starting to green up so I think I'll take a much needed break and start bear hunting.

Sweet moose paddles, Dana when you say 107 sheds, are you counting every piece of tine you see, even if its just chewed up old remains of a shed, or are you talking keepers???? I find lots of old rotton remains, but dont bother taking them, nor 3 point or less!

dana
05-06-2007, 09:11 PM
If it is good enough for me to hang in a tree so I don't pick it up next year, it is tallied in my yearly count. I've had some years where I've had counts over 250 and have packed home over 100. I now only pack home good browns or sheds with some character or sheds that are just flippin' huge, no matter what kind of shape they are in. :)
