Can anyone please shed some light as to why the city of chilliwack is digging gravel from the vedder river with an excavator at this time of year?
I read it's for flood protection but there has to be a better time of year for this.
The damage being done to the habitat of spawning fish is crazy to me during these months.

Call fisheries about it. It might not be approved.

It is actually the safest time of the year to do so. Work like this is done during the "fisheries window" which usually runs August till mid September but has been extended from time to time.

Can you explain why it is the safest time?

Also the excavation is not taking place in the stream bed itself but beside it.

No eggs or fry in the gravel. The silt produced will have minimum effects on adults that may be passing by.

Plus, the water is super low right now too, so probably safest for the peeps operating the machines.

I live near the vedder and they dig huge holes every year! Nice gravel to sell maybe! On a positive note the coho love these holes and are a great place to chuck spoons or flash flys:-D Im not a big fan of greasy oily track hoes in any tributary.

They were digging right in the stream a couple of weeks ago when I was driving by there on my way to cultus.

Does it matter if it's upstream or downstream of the bridge
