My sons first deer shot at about 60 yards with a 1923 30/30 lever action saddle gun with open sights...super stoked for him as he missed one the day before...buck fever and the buckhorn sights don't make it any easier for sure.
Pretty proud dad here...nice little 2 point.

Great shot with the old gun, right through both lungs and took a piece of the heart and liver as well...made him wait for about 10 minutes before we went in. He was bouncing up and down the whole time saying "He jumped, I hit him for sure!" "Do you think I hit him"? Over and over. It was tough for me to wait as well, but wanted him to know that this was the best thing to do...kept telling him let it lay down. I knew it was hit well. Besides we had the blood hound with us as well...a little bigger than this photo now, loves her sheds and keen on the game...she had fresh velvet for dinner.
He found the blood and kept right hot on the trail until he spotted it and was on it like a hot damn. Brought in the pooch and she froze when she saw it and then right up to it.
A couple of does came right up to us and she kept her eyes on them the whole time I showed him how to gut it.

What a great trip for the three of us it was, now I have the excuse to get a crossbow so I can hunt with him...and he is more hooked now than he was before:-D
