I took a week of work and went elk hunting with my 10 year old daughter and 13 year old son. We set up camp the day before and it was just great to get out and enjoy the fall colors and spend some time with the kids. Our goal was to get my daughter her first elk as she just got her hunting license and new Ruger 7mm-08.

First night we saw a nice 5 point but it was about 400 yards, so it was too far for her. Two days later we bugled in a 5 or 6 point (couldn't really tell) to 20 yards and got her just about set up and then it spooked and took off. I bugled again and he answered so we followed it and it came back onto the same trail we were standing about 100 yards away. I set up the shooting sticks and she pulled the trigger but the safety was on and the bull got away.

A couple days later we pulled up to our "Secret Spot" and for the first time ever there was a pickup parked in "MY" spot. We drove down the road a little ways and parked and walked in from there. We sat by one of my trail cams where we have taken pics of a few nice bulls and waited for 3 hours and didn't see anything. We decided to go for a little hike and found sign everywhere (beds, rubs, poop). The wind was pretty strong and it was getting later in the day (10:30am) but figured what the heck and decided to do a bugle. It was hard to hear over the wind but we thought we heard a response. We waited a few minutes and tried again and,,,,,yep that was a bugle.

We pin pointed where he was and managed to get to within 100yards or so but he wouldn't come any closer. We snuck towards him while letting out some bugles and saw two cows that took off but the bull kept bugling. We worked our way through the thick bush and saw him behind a tree with the shoulder exposed. I got the trigger sticks set up and she placed the shot in the perfect spot. He ran about 75 yards and we heard him fall over and then do the death roar and knew that she had just shot her first big game animal and it just so turns out it was a nice 6 x 6.

Was a great holiday and ended on a perfect note.
