Well, after a full year with no game in the freezer Logan says to me " lets not do that again"
He didn't even get out once last year as he was playing hockey 6-7 days a week. So, with the teachers on strike we had a chance to get out for a full day on Thursday. We left the house at 4 am and had the truck parked at our deactivated road by 6. About 50 yds into our hike we bumped a big bull from his bed. Scared the crap out of us both and Logan was quick to hand me his .243 as this 45" moose was only about 10 yds away when he took off. Then he stopped right on the road at 75 yds and stared at us for about 5 min. Ok now we're awake.
We continued on our hike and came across some whitetails, which was cool, because there isn't many of those in this area. Made a couple short stalks on deer looking for a bit of bone. No luck in the am. We had a 2 hr truck nap and drove to town to split a pizza. Then back to the bush. We saw plenty of animals which kept the day interesting. Coyotes mulies Whities more moose. And by 6:30 we were both exhausted and got back to the truck half an hour before dark.
I had just finished telling him how deer just appear out of nowhere at this golden time of day and he says "stop stop there's a deer, it's got spikes!" Then he looks at me like he needs approval , lol. I said what are you waiting for? Get out and dump it!
As I'm whispering "don't forget the slooow squeeze" BANG! Logan dropped his second buck ever. He was very proud of this buck because it was all him this time. He spotted it he confirmed bone and he helped drag it up the cut. He helped with skinning and butchering too.
For me, the most rewarding part was last night at dinner. We were eating tenderloin steak sandwiches melting in our mouths and he says to me "dad, I don't think most people realize how much work that is" "I think this meat tastes soooo good because of all the work we put into it."
